Apple Dumps Intel — Explained! (WWDC 2020)

During the #WWDC20 keynote, Tim Cook announced that, just like Apple had previously transitioned the #Mac from PowerPC to Intel processors, they’d now be transitioning it from Intel to Apple silicon.

So, while there are still a few more Intel Macs that are going to ship, we’re basically at the end of Core i5 or i7 or i9 processors being what powers the Mac, and at the beginning of something like the A-series currently found in the iPad Pro taking over.

Here’s what that means, when it’s happening, why Apple is doing it, how it’s all going to be implemented, and who will be hurt and benefited by it.

I'm so excited for the transition. It feels like the last piece of an incomplete puzzle being put in place.

I've used Macs on and off throughout my life. The reason I switched to Mac was because of Windows Vista. I waited for the second generation Intel Mac to ship before I purchased one. I wasn't disappointed nor did I regret the switch. I'm excited for this new transition so much that I'm more than willing to get a first generation release. That's hard for me to do because I never get a first gen or first batch release of anything, but I feel that Apple will knock this one out of the park. Shut up and take my money already.

2. Will your next Mac be Intel or Apple Silicon? Would you rather have the best of the last or the first of the next?

Going to wait for the new Mac on the new chip instead of buying an intel one. Super excited about this move, just as I was about the intel move. Good video Rene.

So for it to happen, Parallels would have to do the leg-work to emulate x86 Windows on their own.

What worries me the most is that last time when Apple made the switch they took two years to transition and then no Mac OS support for PowerPC chips, if they do they same this time this means we wont get new Mac OS versions after two years on our Intel Macs, and this also means no new X code versions which Apple forces us to update to upload new apps. So this basically means that the Intel macs will become obsolete for us developer after two years

Dang it, you keep setting off my HomePod and other Apple devices when you say “A-Series”… it hears “Hey Siri”!

Exciting times are ahead for Apple users. I'm definitely looking forward to some real-world evaluations and reviews once the new line up of ARM Macs ships and are tested in daily use scenarios.

I’ve seen at least a dozen different videos aiming to explain Apple’s transition from Intel but yours blows the doors off of everyone else. I’m a first-time viewer and the video is still playing but I’ve already liked this video and subscribed to your channel. Bravo!

When I saw the keynote it was like watching the next decade open up before my eyes... This is going to not only put Apple further ahead, but completely change multiple industries... phones... laptops... desktops... and pave the way for the power required for AR, VR, and integration of machine learning and AI in everyday life.

Apple aren't raising the bar anymore.... They are the bar.

I think people are ignoring the potential for Apple to completely displace most desktop and laptop PCs with the iPhone. Think about it - if the Mac and the iPhone run the same OS and the same apps - including stuff like Microsoft Office - there’s no reason for most users to even buy a desktop or even a laptop computer. Just plug your iPhone into a USB C dock, and connect it to an external mouse, keyboard and monitor. Voila! Instant desktop PC. Sell a portable docking station with an LCD screen and a keyboard and you have all the laptop most users need.

This will ultimately be a huge threat to the Windows desktop and laptop PC markets. Especially if something like Parallels is converted to run on the iPhone. It could wipe out the PC market as we’ve known it.

I hope the Apple Silicon Macs don’t kill off dedicated gpus on Mac, also with how heavily Apple has banked on thunderbolt for the past few generations I wonder how they’ll transition.

Do you think that Mac applications switching to Apple Silicon will (in the future) enable some apps to run desktop versions on the iPad just like some iPadOS apps will run on the mac? Or even a section on the iPad AppStore for mac apps? Great to hear your opinion.
