Thomas Sowell is an American economist and political commentator. He taught economics at Cornell University, the University of California, Los Angeles, and since 1980 at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, where he is currently a Senior Fellow.

The scariest part of this to me is that eugenicists, while plainly doing things which are evil, seem to genuinely believe what they're doing is "good." That makes them even more dangerous. As C.S. Lewis put it, "Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." This means that they won't stop unless they wake up and realize they're doing evil.

Thank God for Thomas Sowell, he is truly one of the great minds of our time. I'm running a Cat 320 excavator at work while listening and learning.. doesn't get much better than this.

Many thanks for this. Eugenics was a truly evil theory. I have worked as an economist and demographer in 18+ countries over 50 years on all continents except Australia and Antarctica. Regions included, 5+ years in Africa and 30+ years in Austronesia. I regard human racial differences as merely cosmetic. Cultural differences are what count.

One of the best academic lectures I've heard in years. Parallels can be drawn to today's progressives. Both seem to believe that gov't involvement in people's lives should be promulgated. Both have warped views on the pitiful nature of "lower" races (today's progressives believing in "victimology" and attributing all racial issues to prejudice and racism). Amazing what you can learn when you study these things as Dr. Sowell and his researchers have done.

It can make an atheist believe in God that Sowell keeps on staying alive and well but intellectually sharp into the era he's most desperately needed and via channels like this so generously shared to so many.

I thank God for Mr. Sowell. Most of society just wants to get along, care for their families, and love their neighbors. But in every society there are those who feel they are better than " the
masses." They are full of knowledge, but lack discernment, compassion or common sense.
