An unbelievable performance. Barenboim is the best Maestro alive

Barenboim is arguably the greatest living interpreter of Beethoven's works. The performances he directs are exceptionally nuanced in their dynamics and tempo. And despite the young age of its members, the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra is very accomplished. I love to watch them perform with such enthusiasm, passion, and obvious respect for him. His conducting style is rather unorthodox and, as others have noted, from time to time he will simply stop when things are "in the groove" and let the first chairs lead the orchestra without obvious direction (or perhaps with just a slight nod, gesture, or hand position indicating all is well). He's the only conductor I've ever seen smile (and occasionally wink) at a specific musician / section when particularly pleased.

I envy those privileged to work and learn under his direction. And I admire his advocacy for peace, exemplified in the very diverse, Madrid-based, West-Eastern Divan Orchestra he co-founded with the late Palestinian author-scholar Edward Said. It joined equal numbers of young Arab and Israeli musicians...together with others from Iran, Turkey, Spain...who put aside their ethnic hostility to bond over a common love of classical music. Barenboim is the "gold standard" for conducting and when he finally bows out it will be a huge loss for the world of classical music.

Beethoven's music transcends all of time and space! This symphony in particular gives the most goosebumps with regards to technique and orchestration. In the words of Friedrich Nietzsche, "At a certain place in Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, for example, he might feel that he is floating above the earth in a starry dome, with the dream of immortality in his heart; all the stars seem to glimmer around him, and the earth seems to sink ever deeper downward." A masterpiece with a masterful interpretation!
