I grew up around the Masonic Order. First, the history is based in ancient Egyptian beliefs with sacred geometry and alchemy at its core. The levels of development, called the 33 degrees, are like stage development, like your grade school. The secrecy is grounded in the belief that there is certain information involved that initiates are not ready to process correctly and may abuse it. So, initiates are brought along in stages. Layman think they have a right to know everybody's business. They don't! These lodges in Freemasonry develop character from methods passed down through trial and error from what the ancients knew. The reason all faiths are welcome is because the Masons know that everything is connected to the source involving aspects of alchemy and sacred geometry.

"encourages religious tolerance". hunh. the correct description is that they subscribe to "indifferentism", a tenet that any religion or faith is the same as any other when it comes to bringing one to God or the Truth. the Church does not object to religious tolerance.
