Brake Caliper Rebuild - Dual Piston - Seals, Dust Boots & Dust Boot Clip

This video will show you how to rebuild a brake caliper assembly. The rebuild video was performed on a 1992 Mitsubishi 3000 GT. If you found yourself in a situation replacing brake pads and the caliper pistons won't retract into the caliper; or you got the caliper pistons pressed in but the wheels lock up the first time you pressed down on the brake pedal, the caliper assembly should be rebuilt. Moisture build up in your brake fluid or a split caliper piston boot can result in corrosion or rust build up on the caliper piston slide surfaces. The outer portion of the piston rides on a internal rubber seal recessed in a groove inside the caliper piston hole. It's a very tight fit (to prevent brake fluid from leaking) and any corrosion on the piston slide surface will prevent the smooth movement of the piston(s). Caliper rebuild kits are inexpensive and no expensive specialty tools are required to rebuild caliper assemblies. They consist of piston seals, boots and a boot retention ring/clip.

CM great job I have a 1995 with 187000 miles I wanted to up grade what I had with new rubber brake lines, rotors (drilled and slotted) pads and rebuild the calipers. Your explanation on removing the pistons was very helpful and you did a good job of how to put every thing back to gather.

Great video. I did not know whether I had to stretch the dust boot over the piston like some video show, but since they have metal o rings retainers, I can just clip them on. Line.
Again thank you very much for an excellent excellent video.

Nice to see someone apply caliper paint in several thin coats, as opposed to applying thick coats that impede drying of the paint. Cleaning out bolt recesses in the caliper is a step that's often overlooked, and naturally leads to uneven pad wear. Another nice tutorial; thanks.

Great, succinct explanation. I was stuck on getting that retaining clip in, maybe I can get it in there now.

Thank you for a very informative video. I recently purchased a used Infiniti EX35 AWD for my daily driver for work. I just replaced both of the front bearing wheel hubs, and noticed the drivers side brake caliper isn’t quite right. The inner brake pad is almost to metal but the outer still has a lot of brake pad left. I’m going to try a rebuild on both front calipers within the next month along with new rotors and pads.

I rebuilded the same brake calipers that are in the video. I'm not assured if I installed seal retention ring properly. Should they be visible just buy looking at dust boot?

Great video, I think my Mitsubishi van has the same kind of caliper. Do you think it would be possible to replace the external dust boot without removing the piston and opening up the brake line?

Didnt the retaining clip go under the dust rubber? Im having problems, because this clip is going under the rubber straight to the caliper body wall, and not between the rubber and the caliper body as it should be. Can you help me?

Does the grease you added not contaminate the brake fluid? Iv only Seen brake fluid used. Thanks.

I currently have a 2000 Toyota Camry 2.2L 4 cylinders in New York. The rear sub-frame is rusted out and should be replaced. Any chance you make a video in the near future to show how to replace the rear sub-frame. Thanks.

Where can I get the rebuilt boot and seal

Generally speaking , is the piston seal ( not the dust one ) tapered or is it flat ( the side which will touch the piston as it moves to and fro) ? I want to know if there is a right or wrong way to install that seal into the groove of the caliper body.

Just got my pads replaced, one of the dust boots is broken a little on the outer end, no leaks or anything, as I see, that book as its name says, is to keep dust from getting into the Piston. What hold the fluid pressure and seals the Piston is the inner rubber seal, Am I wrong?

A Toyota dealer quoted (1)$833 for labor and (2) $1633 for sub-frame and all tie rods.
