The Secret for Caliper Piston Dust Seal Installation

Just a quick tip video on how to install dust seal boots on your brake caliper. I struggled to find a video how to do this and found an easy way to do it so I’m sharing it with you. Nobody seemed to have any good information on this. The caliper is from a VW MK2 Polo and I’m refurbishing the brakes, but this will be the same on a lot of different car makes and models.

This is the first video I found that shows how to get the piston seal back on after removing it. I was struggling until I found this. Thanks for posting!

Just one slight modification to your method, if the boot keeps coming off, secure the front part with a zip tie, this prevents the dust cover from sliding off and allows you to extend the cover further back for easier installation and just open up the zip tie when done. Great vid thanks.

Unbelievable! I restored my first car 35 years ago, have saved countless callipers (usually stiff pistons due to rusted dust boot channel rust).

Anyway, always struggled with the boots as had put boot in calliper first. Kept thinking I must be missing something, found this vid, tried it, works like an absolute charm.

Thank you, thank you!

Absolutely saved my day! Had to rebuild both front callipers today, exact same ones. I'm so happy I watched this before doing so because I would not have figured this. I got one in on the first try, the other on the second. Finished in no time. Thanks a million for this upload!

Should have greased the rubber squared ring seal before seating it. Because the grease should protect the rubber better than straight brake fluid (or lack thereof) when the housing and the piston get hot. The dust cover/boot installation was the primary instruction which was very good.

Well if anyone needs to do that job this video will be a great help for them. As always very easy to follow.

Using a compressor makes this process so much I’m easier. Insert the rubber dust cover first, then apply a small bit of air to the caliper where the brake hose connects and at the same time hold the piston softly against the dust cover. The air will push the dust cover over the piston for you with no effort at all.

Best video I have seen showing the way to install seal and piston. I will be doing this job on the truck next week. Thanks for your help.

Nice to see someone with a bit of competence.

This is the best video that illustrates the proper method. It is counter-intuitive, as I was trying to install the dust shield into the caliper first. Thanks very much!!!

Did mine today, and was easy thanks to your video.

I also got the repair kit from Big Red, excellent company to deal with, and quality kit.

Thank you 👍

Thanks for the upload! Accidentally popped mine out while doing brakes and rotors 😅 tried to force it with a flat head and the piston all the way down.. very helpful!

Excellent tutorial, hadn't done this for about 20 years, so needed a bit of a reminder. Many thanks.

It’s an absolute ball ache of thing to do especially when attached on the car still. It’s infuriating to get the seal to sit on the caliper. I really need to get the caliper off the car in the future. Great video.

I puzzled this out myself a few years back after struggling for sometime. However, many thanks for posting.👍
