The full extent of Hurricane Helene's devastation is becoming increasingly clear as heartbreaking stories emerge from once-peaceful towns across southern and central Appalachia.

A barrage of devastating images has now flooded in from North Carolina, capturing the scale of the destruction caused by what some call "biblical" flooding.

In Avery County, a harrowing video provided by Vlado Novakovic showed his home being swept away in Newland by the powerful currents Friday, underscoring the catastrophic nature of the disaster residents are facing.

This is my hometown. It was hit very hard by Helene. Unfortunately, the high country hasn't and will never get the coverage it deserves/needs. Everyone is so focused on Asheville (yes, Asheville got hit hard and needs help too) but these small communities need a lot of help too!

I lived in Newland for over 30 years and this is hard to watch. People there are tough and help each other in times like these.

This is why I moved far away from the water, elevation 100 feet now, not the previous 9-11 inches of Newport News, Va. The waters of a river are no less hungry than the ocean, it will grab and take what it wants…it will stay this way without improving…so plan accordingly.

I live in Rutherford North Carolina it is more than just Asheville. The small towns are just as bad if not worse look up chimney rock and lake lure. We’re so sick of being unnoticed we an hour away from Asheville and we are one of the poorer countys in NC. 1000+ missing 100 deceased. Some places here you’re not even able to call 911 anymore. These town on the sides of the mountains took a big hit.

Yes this is so terrible. And this town only has a population of like 800 when Asheville has 95000. Everyone needs to be praying for these people.
