In the United Kingdom, the war in Ukraine, covid and Brexit have all led to a perfect storm of conditions that have led to massive inflation and a spiralling cost of living crisis. With energy bills now set to rocket even higher this coming winter, it’s not just ordinary Brits that are feeling the pinch, but businesses too - and that’s led to some wondering just how they’re going to cope. Our reporters Luke Shrago and Zohra Benmiloud went to meet some of those affected.

Britain is a consumer/retail economy, if that goes there is nothing left

The problem is that profits will also be down due to customers not having any money left aside to pay for a treat of eating out anymore, by the time they have paid their own household bill's there ain't anything left over. So the public cant even help out by supporting the restaurants, chippies etc as nobody can afford to eat out anymore

The Western leaders got the outcome they wished for.

This is what happens when the people in power are so out of touch with the reality of the common folk.

This is happening EVERYWHERE. My mountain community has always been pricey, but breakfast for 25 dollars Canadian? Hot truck sandwich for 20 dollars? Even the Irish cheddar I like in Canada (8 or 9 bucks_ is 11 dollars USA in Los Angeles. I bought it for mom. I rarely eat out now.

It will just not be the pubs that will close on a scale never seen before but shops of all shapes and sizes will follow. Even the local fish and chips shops are doomed to close and the worst thing of all
Are social habits that come with these places will decline and civil unrest will follow and then who knows..

Maybe if pubs and restaurants weren’t so overpriced. Customers wouldn’t be put off going to them

I can cook a nice nutritious meal for about £1. Even if I really push the boat out, I can cook a really good meal for under £5. A pint of bitter and a bag of crisps at home cost about £1.50. So, cutting out pubs and restaurants is a very obvious way to save money.

Yet all the energy companies keep posting record profits!!!

It's deliberate. The plan is twofold. Drive restaurants / pubs out of business by economic means thus destroying corner stones of communities - the populace is then even easier to divide and conquer in the future. Once driven out, the empty properties can then be developed into profitable housing projects for Tory supporters and doners.

The cost of living has continuously outstripped income growth. It has been doing so for decades and decades.

Energy is now the media frenzy...

But it's everything.

Example: housing. 1980 and I could buy a house for 20 thousand. Now? Same house - 250 thousand. That's a staggering increase... and one that is far beyond my salary increase over the same period.
1980 and a pint cost me one pound. Now it's closer to 5 pounds. A fivefold increase... My wages haven't increased fivefold in that same period.

It's fairly obvious that such a situation will ultimately have to reach some kind of critical mass event.

Lots of restaurants in this country rip off prices for not much food and to many takeaways my small town over 30 places to eat but hardly any shops so if they go I would not be bothered at all.

Luckily for France, they completely ignored the E.U articles on state monopolies and kept EDF under state control. Not really sure how they managed it but it’s certainly paying off for them now.
