Apple has been improving the smartness of the Homepod, and much of what the Dot will do, it will as well. I have 3 of them because of their great sound (esp with 2 paired). That said, having a Dot or 2 around the house is not expensive for the more esoteric things you may want to play with.

You could unmute it using a voice command. Mute means it can't talk, not that it can't listen. If it can't listen as well then mute is the wrong word. Staples Black Friday 2017 $29.

Thanks for your very detailed look at this and all of the reality checks. I never thought about Google's tendency to forget to support products, but you're right. As much as I love Google, I have an original Kindle Fire somewhere here that still works and is still supported by Amazon.

you can talk to one device to do something on a other one with the one line app by setting it to everywhere or giving it a name in the app.

You can set a routine to turn one device on and one off. If you need help let me know. (Just do it as a Routine instead of a grouping in the Smart Home section). I have it set to trigger when I say “Goodnight”, turns one thing on and another off.
