Insomniac: "Everyday I'm Shuffling"

Here's what works for me, EVERY TIME:
I listen to a podcast or audiobook on slightly reduced speed. But instead of listening to the content, I am waiting for them to say a word that contains the letter "A". After they say it, I continue listening for a word with the letter "B" and so on. I have never reached the end of the alphabet.

Im gonna overthink trying to think of a random word 💀

I've tried a lot for my insomnia, but this is a new one for me! Worth a shot, thanks for sharing.

I intuitively figured out this technique and it works 😁 I noticed that my brain plays random thoughts on it's own just before falling asleep. So I wondered if I voluntarily played random thoughts in my head, will it help me fall asleep? I tried it, and it worked 😂

I work out scenes for my fanfics. They feed my dreams too.

While trying to sleep someday a blacksmithing video randomly popped up and the sound of hammering felt really nice and was able to fall asleep quickly. Have watched blacksmithing videos to bed enough times now that I feel sleepy just by watching them even when I'm not in bed.

I think I do a similar thing by trying to come up with a story. I've done it since I was a child and even have heard of others doing it. I try to think of a story and how it will go and all that and then little by little I lose track of the story and then boom I'm alseep. Works really well for me and I always recommend it to others!

I tried this, and it was worse than falling asleep to a youtube video. It just made me more alert and awake. Took me twice as long as normal to fall asleep.

Yea this would definitely keep me awake lol. The thing that happens for me is I purposefully let my subconscious just sort of take the wheel, and it'll turn into watching a movie. Basically starting a dream cycle before I actually fall asleep, on the nights where I struggle to actually sleep it's pretty trippy because it's full on dreaming without sleep. It can be really disorienting when it doesn't actually pull me into a proper sleep cycle, but it's the only way I end up sleeping.

I use podcasts for this. Particularly, I use the Lore podcast and I set it to 1 hour, and whatever Aaron Mahnke is talking about, I visualise in my head. I'm melatonin deficient, thus deal with a lot of insomnia, but between the visualising and Aaron Mahnke's voice, I don't even make it to the end of an episode.

It's like an adult bedtime story, it's great.

You called out Big Boss Man. I always knew you were a man of great culture lol

I'm pretty much aphantasic (cannot visualise as pictures), so the visualising part just ain't gonna happen. Happily, I extremely rarely have trouble going to sleep (though I do wake up a lot!).

personally, as cliche as it is, deliberate slow breathing (count your inbreath and outbreath) has always worked for me.

I created a fantasy daydream that I would always repeat in exactly the same way. Eventually my brain gets bored and drifts off to sleep. Since I'm already in a daydream I don't notice that I've started dreaming so I don't get jolted back awake by the realization that I've actually fallen asleep. This method also helps me to lucid dream.
I rarely take control of the dream. I might gently nudge things, but I like to see where my imagination takes itself.

pretty sure that would do the exact opposite for me.
Just the thought of doing that just to fall asleep faster freaks me out.
Anything that envolves voluntarily trying to sleep freaks me out and then wakes me up, in order for me to sleep, i need to forget that im trying to sleep. This would leave me way to aware that im trying to sleep

I did this for almost 45min straight last night before I was too exhausted to keep it up. It does NOT work if you have aphantasia. I guess visualizing it really is key.
