Learn the language. You don’t need to know the language fluently, just learn the basics. Weather your in Hawaii, The Netherlands or even Japan, learning the basics of the local language could save you a lot of hassle when your trying to communicate.

See, things like this make me honestly gutted that I'm not a man, because I would love to be able to hop in the front seat of a taxi and chat to the driver in a foreign country, or explore and make friendships with anyone in the world. I really would. My friend does things like speaks to everyone and even got invited to family homes in India, Vietnam and Laos and I can't imagine that experience because it would be far too dangerous.

Some of these lovely tips would probably heavily backfire for women in many places of the world. E.G. being friendly to everyone/hiring someone and forging that sort of relationship/walk everywhere. The first two are VERY likely to be misconstrued in many places outside of the West, which isn't strictly the fault of the locals because they have a different way of life. The latter can put you at huge risk (yes also for men, but for women the risk increases exponentially) in some places, even in the middle of the day. Be careful ladies, please do remember that - whilst these tips may work for men - we aren't seen as equal everywhere, unfortunately. </3 read up on gender-related customs before you travel. <3

A simple bag of assorted chocolates to give the flight attendants will insure if they are upgrading anyone you are have moved yourself to the top of the list. Keep the bag sealed so they know it is not tampered with and you have just made the crews day for a few dollars.

If traveling in Mexico by bus (which I highly recommend), go for the "Luxury" or "Premium" service. These are renowned for their safety, reliability, and comfort. They average $30-$50 USD and the buses are hella comfortable. Also, be prepared to make frequent stops. These include terminals and military/agriculture checkpoints. Keep a lock on your suitcase, carry your immigration documents in case an official asks to see them, and carry a small bag with essentials like a charger and snacks.

(1)A 5' (60 in/1.5m) charging cord and wall plug adapter for your phone, especially have the adapter have an LED to let you know if it has power. Not a 3' (1m), not a 4' (1.2m), not a 6' (1.9 m) and not a 10' (3m). Plane or bus this gives you enough length to be comfortable to use the device while it is plugged in. I have a 2 slot adapter, so on bus can share with seatmate. They provide their own cord. Had many a trip where we had one outlet that worked and the adapter would not stay in so I had to position leg to keep it in. Much easier to do with one than two adapters. (2) Other hack, if you use airport parking, put your ticket INSIDE your phone case. When you arrive back home you can easily find it to ransom your ride.(3) And a given-treat the ticket counter people and the gate people very nicely. These days a lot of them end up doing double shifts, and nearing the end of the day, nice will go a LONG ways. [one airport really late, a fellow ripped the gate person a new one because weather delays had meant a late flight and no way to make transfer. They got told they could reticket in the morning. Period. I dug out my best customer service self and approached seconds after he stalked off and POLITELY with my best vibes, asked if I could get reticketed. I got a breakfast and a supper voucher and a free shuttle ride for a five hour sleep at a hotel, on the airline. Plus my reticket. Next morning snarly dude looked terrible for sleeping in the terminal. I topped it by the same agent being there to start that early day, across was a Starbucks. I asked what they drank, and went and got them $3.50 worth of coffee. I got an upgrade for that. Very nice.

I took a school trip to Ireland in 2007 and brought one of my parent's suitcases from the 1980s. There was no missing it on the baggage carousel.

Damn, I just came back from vacation today. Could've used this before we went, but oh well. That serves me for abandoning Reddit.

If you need headphones for the plane it is COMPLETELY worth paying extra for over ear headphones

Bring a powerboard with surge protection, whilst travelling internationally you'll only need to buy one power outlet adaptor, it protect devices from mismatched power and also keep all chargers together. I do this domestically too to keep everything together

Ziplock bag for pocket stuff going through security. Put the items in the bag(s) and return it to your pocket(s) until time to go through. Or wear a hat and plop it all into the hat.

When I went to Rome I got a cheap hotel about an hour walk from the “historic district” with all the cool stuff, I woke up early and set out to the city center and worked my way from the Spanish steps to the Roman Colosseum. With that I got a discount on a tour since it was the last spot so I got it for 50 euros then the websites price of 120. This included an option for the Vatican and a tour by this guy called the Gladiator Guide. Great way I could’ve seen Rome for the first time.

Give a bag of candy to the flight attendants when boarding the plane. No one EVER thinks of them and they will be so happy. You’ll get treated like a rock star on the plane. I’ve received free food on flights where the food costs extra because I gave them candy. My friend gave a bag of foot masks to the crew because they’re on their feet all the time and she thought they’d appreciate it. They hooked her up with a seat upgrade and gave her a voucher for $75 off a future flight.

Only thing I'd add is to not be a typical, basic, idiot tourist and treat natives like normal people. They know you're a foreigner and may not like or remember their ways. They'll respect you much more if you are genuinely an asshole than if you are fake and awkward.

If you have the back for it, a backpack is the best bag I've found for traveling light. It is light weight, can possibly count as your lap bag (the one you put under the seat) if you're able to pack it light enough, and keeps your hands free while at the airport especially if you need to convert money or be on your phone a lot. Plus since you're carrying it and not pulling it you're more likely to nix things you don't really need. Also, have emergency cash on you and spread it out- put some in your luggage, some on you in different places (in your shoe, in your bra, in your toiletry bag, etc that way if you get robbed or loose your luggage you are not SOL.
