brilliant. I can't ever bring myself to ever throw these cases out. Now I can repurpose them. Thanks.

I just did something similar with a old case. I cut out the molding on both sides, but then found that it lost a lot of its integrity so I laid down a large piece of cardboard and sprayed the inside with 3 coats of a rubber spray giving at least 3 coats between spraying. Not only did it make the stronger the inside is like padded. Was pretty cool. I just found you and subscribed, loved the oscillating tool blade sharpening video with the tri - file.

Great idea!

I bought about 10 Makita boxes on Craig's List for $5 a box. Did the same thing you did but for routers, cheap HF drills etc. Amazing!

(still keeping your son Bobby in my prayers.)

I repurposed a dewalt reciprocating saw case to fit an inexpensive porter cable replacement. I truly believe keeping these electrical tools that aren't used regularly in a case extends the life of the tool by many years, plus as you said, it's a nice place to keep all those loose attachments. These cases would be a good thing to search out at garage sales. Thanks, Bob!!

Old video but still useful, I've been battling with a utility knife, hotair gun, grips and shears - good excuse to buy an oscillating tool

Cool video, I’ve been doing this for years and it works great!
I’ve used a variety of tools to cut away the unwanted plastic and they all have their pros & cons..I’ve used Drexel’s, die grinders/drywall cut out tool, utility knives (probably the most dangerous method) spade/paddle bits to remove the areas where it’s molded to the front/back of the case, even a hot knife has proven handy and probably cuts the fastest and cleanest because you are melting through the plastic. Very good point mentioned about not cutting out the top or areas where it’s not needed, I’ve found “the more you cut out the LESS structural integrity the case will have”

I've done this in the past. The only difference is after cutting out the original plastic mold insert, I replaced it by gluing cubed pick n pluck foam inserts that I picked up from eBay for around $8.00 for a 19" x 15" x 3" piece. This way I have a custom cut out foam insert to stop my tools from rattling around inside (especially useful if your tool has small accessories or attachments).

My dad bought 5 cases off marketplace for$15. He then used his oscillator to gut the cases and use spray glue and sponge to make cases for his nail guns. It worked really well.

Cases like those show up in yard sales. I didn't know you could take out the guts and have a plain case. Nice video.

Another use is keeping all that stuff you need to have in your truck. Tie down straps, bungee cords, a few misc tools, first aid kit and needed meds, EDC kit, etc. I've picked these up at yard sales for a few dollars. Add some foam and makes a good gun so....I've uh, heard.

Great hack DW6. The time has come to get one of them oscillating tools. I'm always the last guy in to get a new tool that everybody else has had for 20 years. You can't do a good hack without the right tool. LOL. I will KIT d.

Good hack, add a little foam padding so it doesn't rattle =)

great idea, you know, half the time, the case doesn't even have enough space for the original tool, because you can never wrap the electrical cord as tight as when it was new.

Wow! Just what I was looking to do with one of my empty Milwaukee cases. Thanks!

I find these tool cases all the time. Used one to store jumper cables in my vehicle... after I removed plastic molding.

Good video. About to do this to a Milwaukee case almost identical to yours. Posted it for $15 and nobody has taken it so just gonna make it useful. Thank you sir

I’m think this is good for sets of children’s toy too. My kids love boxes like this and it’ll keep them wanting to be tidy and keep their small sets of bits together.
