STEP - BY - STEP
— if your hole isn’t square, cut away the drywall around it with a box knife to make it square…square holes are easier to patch
— cut a piece of sheet rock about 2in larger than your hole on all sides (+4 inches to the width and height measurements of your hole, trace and cut it out with a utility knife)
— trace out the dimensions of the hole on the back of this square (the brown paper side) in the middle, cut around the lines with a box knife, just scoring the paper and not cutting all the way through
— bend the drywall along the lines you cut until it breaks, then gently peel the Sheetrock off of the back, leaving the paper on the front..do this on all 4 sides. You can make diagonal cuts in the corners from your box to the outside to make this easier
— add joint compound to all four sides of the paper on the back, applying it generously then smush the piece into the hole, as you smush it, the extra mud will squeeze out giving you a tight hold
— smooth more joint compound over the top with taping knife, making a few passes and getting everything as smooth as possible. Don’t scrape too much off…Leave enough joint compound so you can’t see the paper and let it dry completely
— once it’s dry, use 120 grit sandpaper to smooth out any little bumps or ridges then make sure to prime it before painting it to match the wall (this is important to make sure the paint absorbs evenly and you won’t see a difference in the patched area)
