Igelkott etymology: Igull (Sea urchin) Kottr (Cat) - Sea Urchin Cat... yeah, ok Sweden.

Err, there is a Finnish word piikkisika (thorn pig) but it doesn't mean hedgehog but a crested porcupine.

As a Norwegian I feel misrepresented... In Norway it's normally called pinnsvin, or piggsvin, pigg meaning "spike" and svin meaning "hog"... So while I can't speak on behalf of the Danes, and I would never want to defend their language to begin with, I can say that there's no "stick" in our name...

The "igel" part of igelkott does not mean leech. "igel" comes from the PIE word "egh", meaning "to pierce". This became "ekhidna" in Greek, which is both a moray eel and a spiny anteater.

Well swedish have piggsvin for porcupine. And hedgehoges looks kind of like a big pinecone that bites :p

In finnish we do have the word "spike pig", but that's our name for porcupine. Piikkisika.
