ATP: Is Fructose a Driver of Alzheimer’s Disease? | Dr. Richard Johnson & Dr. Robert Lustig

Показать описание
Fructose and its byproduct uric acid may play a role in the development of Alzheimer’s, thanks to an evolutionary adaptation hijacked by the modern diet. Fructose can be directly consumed, or the body can convert high-glycemic carbohydrates and other foods to fructose. Fructose suppresses some cognitive functions. Dr. Richard Johnson and Dr. Robert Lustig discuss a new study, of which Johnson was an author, on how fructose may be a potential driver in Alzheimer’s, and they hypothesize about fructose’s potential connection to the development of other conditions.

Fatty Liver Disease leads to Metabolic dysfunction. "When large quantities of fructose reach the liver, the liver uses excess fructose to create fat, a process called lipogenesis. Eventually, people who consume too much fructose can develop nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, a condition in which too much fat is stored in the liver cells." Univ Pennsylvania Med School

Very interesting. I know that for me keto with mostly whole natural foods plus intermittent fasting greatly reduces my hunger. I did a 22 hour fast yesterday and all that ate was a ribeye and some green beans and it’s 14 hours later and I’m not hungry. The only thing that I’ve had today is some tea and I’ve been running errands and went for a walk this morning.

I had lost 70 lbs and maintained it for 5 years on the Body Ecology Diet, which is a type of very low-carb diet. And I was never much of a fruit eater anyway
But then someone convinced me to eat fruit again, so I added some - not a lot but some - to my breakfasts. And it was a long time ago (early 2000s), so I don't remember the details except that within one month, i had gained 25 lbs and within a year I had gained back all 70 lbs and then some.
But it was still many years before I understood that the fruit had any, let alone so much, influence over that outcome. OR especially the part fructose played!

Fructose as in sugar, might induce Alzheimer’s, we don’t know that for sure, but fructose in fruit is met with fiber, enzymes, minerals and vitamins, so I don’t think fruits cause Alzheimer’s, there are other factors, like leaky gut.

People from Sardinia, Corsica eat lots of fruit, drink wine and have virtually no metabolic syndrome.

Sodium increases the endogenous conversion of glucose to fructose via the polyol pathway. Low sodium diets work to counter this effect.

But if you’re doing the well-formulated ketogenic diet, your blood glucose is regulated more tightly and your kidneys waste more sodium due to the decrease in insulin, so you need a 1-2g extra intake of sodium a day while doing the well-formulated ketogenic diet.
