Health Secretary Wes Streeting has pledged to shift billions of pounds from hospitals to GPs to improve NHS access, promising patients they’ll see the same family doctor at every visit.

It’s Streeting's first major policy move as he prepares for talks with junior doctors to end strikes that have plagued the NHS since 2022.

Currently, less than 10% of the £165bn NHS budget goes to primary care, despite high demand at GP surgeries. Streeting aims to increase this share to ensure quicker patient access.

Over 5 million patients in England now wait more than two weeks for a GP appointment, despite past promises of appointments within 14 days.

Julia Hartley-Brewer speaks with former NHS Trust Chairman, Roy Lilley.

Define austerity Roy Lilley? In no year since 2010 did government receipts exceed government expenditure.
