Blimey mate, flashbacks of my experience of an MG Midget! I'm hoping to get back into a proper British classic again one day like a Minor or MGB. Hope you get this back on the road. One job at a time, that's the way to do it. Don't know if you can get the sub frame welded up or it's a replacement job..
The main thing is your ability to do the repairs yourself, if not you really are in trouble. Are you in a classic car club? These people usually know someone who can help guide you along the way bearing in mind your tight budget.

Be sure to always grease the front wheel twist joints regularly, otherwise the wheels could collapse. Seen a few crash over the years, very very dangerous. Good luck with it.

At the risk of making you even more disheartened, before doing anything else at all look on line for Moggy rust points and check the rest of the car thoroughly! In the worst possible scenario you could find even more in the inner seals, and if you can't weld yourself it could then become just too expensive, how ever much you love the car. Have you considered a second hand MIG and tackling it yourself. With plenty of practice beforehand you could save a shedload of money.

Oh, it's devastating to discover rot. Kinda makes me think of the impermanence of things. Hope things are going well and it'll be all sorted, you and Jean are an inspiration!
