What is a meniscus tear?

The meniscus is the c-shaped piece of cartilage inside the knee. It serves as a shock absorber and can be torn by twisting or bending your knee. In younger, active patients, it usually requires surgery. Surgery involves sewing the meniscus back together or trimming the torn part out. Return to sports and exercise can take 6 to 8 weeks if the torn part is trimmed out but 6 months or more if it's repaired. Even with surgery, you can still develop arthritis in the future.
