For many, learning to use CPAP Therapy can be extremely challenging! Especially in the beginning.

Here's 3 important tips can help you get comfortable using CPAP Therapy.

1. Change your negative attitude towards CPAP.
I know i know! You don't want to wear a mask. Who on earth would!? The truth is, you need to so it's not going to do you any good bitching and moaning about it. You need to start thinking of the positives. I'm going to have so much more energy! I'm not going to knackered all day, i'm going to have more fun with my kids, i'm going to have a better mood as i won't be tired and grumpy, my wife / husband is not going to be complaining of my snoring, i'm going to LIVE LONGER! I'm going to be healthier, happier.......I could go on for days! Get your mind thinking positive and that way you are more likely going to give it a real go.

2. Steady as she goes! Start at a low pressure and then over the weeks, gradually increase it as you get comfortable with each pressure level.
You need to take control of your therapy! Don't be bullied by your health care 'professional' as more often than not, they have never actually used a CPAP machine in their lives.
Learn for yourself what your machine can do! Learn how to adjust the pressure levels, learn what each setting does. Take the time to fully understand what your machine is doing of a night.

At lower pressure you will find it a lot easier to get use to therapy. Your mask will be more comfortable as you won't have to make it to tight for the air leaks, it will be easier to breathe against the pressure coming in, you will find it far more enjoyable. Over time, you can gradually increase your pressure levels to get more control of your sleep apnoea but just take it nice and slow.

3. Don't stop until you find the right mask!
There's literally hundreds of different CPAP mask styles and sizes available so there will be one for you.....You just have to find it! Make sure you educate yourself on how to adjust the mask straps and fit your mask properly on your face. Make sure you are cleaning your mask on a daily basis. Visit a clinic, ask them to show you the range, check out manufacturer websites to see what is available as you might not always get shown the wide range etc.

4. Be persistent and consistent.
You need to keep at it. You need to try every night, you need to practice breathing with it on a regular basis. The more you use it, the easier it will eventually become. Every time you put that mask on and start breathing, your body is adapting to it, your face is adapting to the mask, your lungs are adapting to the pressure so the more consistent you are with using it, the faster you're going to adapt to it.

I hope you found this useful. Cheers

Im 61 and tonight will be my third night with my CPAP. I live in So California. I was fortunate to receive an hour’s long orientation with a Resp Therapist who gave me a lot of info and some time for questions. I found myself a bit depressed . Iappreciate the encouragement to change my mindset. My husband has been supportive. I have two grandbabies so there’s no reason to be negative. Night #1 was a bit rough. Night #2 was notably easier. Tonight is Night 3! I wish everyone out there who’s new to this list of patience and luck.

I was about to give up after my first night, hated it, ready to take the machine back. Then I watched your video... I got my mind set right, turned the pressure down and slowly ramping back up each night. What a difference. Thanks so much for your advice.

Just finished my first week with cpap. It was all so awkward at first, the tubing, the pillow mask, going to the bathroom, sort of depressing. But, here I am, a week later feeling like a pro. I’ve been a side/stomach sleeper my entire life, I’m getting used to back sleeping just to manage the tubing better. I really appreciate your videos, and all the people that comment, it is encouraging and I don’t feel so alone.
Thank you!

Laying here right now with my mask on. Just started this earlier this month, and it’s been difficult. Thank you for the tips 😊

It just feels like I’m breathing my own exhale… anyone else feel that way?

My wife had been telling me I stopped breathing in my sleep for like three years now and I finally relented to a sleep study. Having a doctor tell you your oxygen dropped to 70% only got like five minutes of rem sleep a night is eye-opening. I love my CPAP machine, took to it like a fish in water. They started me with an N 30 mask but I switched to a P 10 and I'm much happier.

I'm a 23 year old woman who was just diagnosed with sleep apnea. Not exactly the diagnosis I was expecting to have at my age. I am looking forward to getting my machine, I am just so so exhausted all the time. Thank you so much for your video. I really hope it helps, I need some energy.

I was so negative about this. It looked and felt uncomfortable at first, but I controlled my breathing and settled down and the next couple of days it felt so relaxing. I feel so much better and my body feels so refreshed when I wake up. For those who are just beginning and contemplating CPAP, it is hard and intimidating at first, but it’s so worth it. Think about your long term health as the end result.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for this video! I just started cpap therapy and have been very discouraged by it. I wear it for approximately 2 hours each night before taking it off and then falling asleep. Your video was very encouraging and so very helpful. Thanks for taking the time to make this and to share your knowledge! Cheers!

Been on a machine for 18 months and i must say its changed my life. I went into it with a positive mindset. And its been easy to adapt. I found a new partner and was unsure she would like the idea of it but she has been great and wants me to be fit and healthy so it works for us both in that way.
I know plenty of people that say its so inconvenient but honestly being tired 24/7 is inconvenient and not to mention bloody dangerous.
I accept that i need the machine to live a decent life and i even use it in my caravan.
Thanks for your positive thought on the use of a cpap machine.

Nick, I'm so grateful for you and this video. Like others have described, I was intimidated by CPAP therapy and your calm, reassuring, genuine demeanor and advice really helped me. "Get your head on right" and "Be persistent" were great. And your Australian accent made it even better. Many times during my first week, when the mask was annoying me during the night and I wanted to rip it off, I heard your voice saying "be persistent" and so I stuck with it, rolled over, and ended up getting a great night's sleep. I've now used it 17 out of 19 nights and can't imagine sleeping without it. I'm not exhausted the next day like I was before, and it's made it easier to do my job. Thank you so much.

You’re a hero. Thank you. I just started my CPAP therapy and the nasal mask was blowing far too hard for me (even with the high and low set to 4.0 - the lowest the machine goes) and was causing a panic attack.

After listening to your video, I decided to just wear the mask without turning the air pressure on, which I found was actually still blowing a gentle air through it, and decided I would try that for the first few nights instead. No doctor talked me through it, the resmed agent didn’t explain things to me, I had no one to go to about it. Other videos were nice and all, but not really helpful. Your video immediately calmed my nerves, stopped the panic attack I was fighting and I finally could wear my nasal mask comfortably.

Thank you so much.

Thank you very much. What you said confirmed exactly what I was thinking. I just started the other night and I couldn't use the damn thing because the pressure was set up too high. I set it low for now until I get used to it, then I figured I'd gradually increase it. Excellent analogy to lifting weights. Thanks again take care and God bless.

Thanks for the video. My wife just started CPAP therapy using a Resmed 10 provided by the NHS two nights ago. Before she used the machine we watched loads of your videos so she knew what to expect and how to operate the machine. She was dreading it but achieved scores of 98 and 100% respectively. Its helped take the pressure off.

Thanks so much for the encouragement. I was recently diagnosed with chronic sleep apnea and was worried about some of the stuff you talked about. Last night I did my CPAP titration test and all I can say is, I haven't slept this well in over 15 years! Dopamine's through the roof! So, I'm pretty motivated to wear this thing every night if I can wake up like this every day- holy crap. I was most worried about the mask leaking and styles, because I had to use several. But I'm not worried anymore, I didn't know there were that many to choose from. Thank you!

Last night was my second night with the CPap. The first night was very difficult. I felt like I was suffocating, but I tried to persevere. After 3 hours I took it off. Last night was so much better, I went into it positive, and even though it took awhile to fall asleep, I ended up sleeping from 11 pm to 5:30 pm. Being positive is the key point. Looking forward to having a good third night.
