I have both of these training drones, the Hubsan X4 and the Holystone 170.

The X4 is decent if somewhat basic, a really good entry level drone and is virtually indestructible bar general wear and tear to props and motors. However the HS is so much better and the features make it really fun to play with. I highly recommend getting the HS170. I haven't crashed the HS170 badly yet, but that is due to it being so easy to fly. Get either of these and you will be very happy with your purchase.

I have a Hubsan X4 and I can see where the landing gear on the Predator would be a distinct advantage. Five minutes of indoor flying, and the prop shafts on my X4 are tangled with dog hair and carpet fuzz. Getting the quad a little bit up off of the floor would save me a lot of prop pulling and carpet fiber removal. Great review!

Thanks for the video. I was just getting into quads last September and ran across an Amazon seller who had misc items and two quads for sale. They were HS170 C with the little camera and a full surround prop guard for $7.35 each, yes two for less than $15. Figured they were returns they bought from someone else and even if they didn't work well, I should be able to get one working set out of the two. I tried one but it was so touchy I just put them away.

After your video showing how well they fly, I got the other one out and its a lot more controllable. I think the first one has the controller stuck in high mode because it doesn't click when pushing down and using it is too hard to try and fly. Thanks for pointing back to take another look at them.

Actually you gave me the idea to see how the Hubsan X4 compared and what I found is I actually have two Hubsan X4 C+ with the 720 camera with a Holy Stone branded cover on it and a Holy Stone transmitter. I lost one of the rubber bumpers from the bottom of one and I can get them from Hubsan. Thanks again.

My first Quad Drone was a Propel Ocula, which I still have. Compared to the HS170 it is a piece of junk (and 4x the cost new). About 2-3/minutes flight time max, very under-powered after less than a minute into flight, very erratic with regard to control and stability in wind, and much heavier than the HS170. It does have a camera, but I’ve never used it, as I only wanted it as a flight trainer, which was a bit challenging, but doable. However, once I got the HS170 I was amazed by its smooth, sensitive control, much lighter weight, 2-3x longer flight time, excellent lighting and lightening top speed. The HS REALLY IS all it claims to be. My son flew my first one into the top of a very large tree (where it still resides) so I bought a 2nd one from Amazon because I just love the way it flies for only $25. At low speed it is extremely stable, non-threatening, and easy to control. It is so light that power off drops from even serious heights don’t cause any damage. Thus fly aways don’t ever have to happen as either the “panic button” or the “autoland button” can always be pressed terminating any flight. I am an experienced R/C acrobatic airplane and basic R/C helicopter pilot, but now find myself speed flying around my front yard chasing cats with my HS170 more than anything else. This thing is a ball.

These are really good. Just bought one from Kogan online in Australia. It's branded as a Kogan product but it is the same quad. It's only $30 AUD.

I just bought this as my entry into learning how to fly drones. I will note that the transmitter only requires 2 AA batteries now 🙂

Have you ever tried the XK X100. Very similar to this but with acro and the ability to fly inverted.
