Mazda CX-9 Rear Brake Pad Replacement with Electric Parking Brakes (EPB) 2016 2017 2018 2019 2020

This is another video in my maintenance series on the Mazda CX-9 current generation 2016 2017 2018 2019 2020. I also have videos for how to change the Engine Air Filter, Cabin Air Filter and the Spark Plugs.

The brake pads I used were Raybestos MGD1934CH R-Line Ceramic and cost $19.74 delivered from Rockauto. We'll see how they do over time.

The mileage on the CX-9 was only 57500 miles and the rear pads already seemed pretty low around 20% or less. The front pads still seem to have over 50%.

Please note: I'm not a professional. I'm just sharing what I did on my 2016 Mazda CX-9 Signature.

To speed up the video just use the Youtube Speed Settings.

Please leave a thumbs up if you can so that others will see the videos. My videos are not monetized - they're just to help others.

Overall, he's done a reasonable job and I appreciate the time he put into making the video. As others have said, please use maintenance mode for the rear park/emergency brake instead (if you're not able to activate maintenance mode, make sure you start the procedure with the park/emergency brake not engaged - if it's engaged/on, maintenance mode won't activate. Also it's best not to make direct contact with the clamp and piston - use an old brake pad as the contact point to push the piston back in. Finally - always use brake pad lubricant on the back of the pads and on the mounting lugs (on the left and right of the pad).

You're not supposed to remove the servo/motor from the caliper. You're supposed to set the Electric Parking Brake into (EPB) into "Maintenance Mode" There are several tutorials on the internet. To summarize:
1.) Turn ignition ON without starting engine (tap ignition button twice without touching any pedals)
2.) Press brake and push DOWN on the EPB switch to release the EPB.
3.) Press Accelerator pedal to FLOOR.
4.) Push DOWN on EPB switch.
5.) With Accelerator pedal to FLOOR and EPB switch DOWN, use another hand to tap the ignition button 3x.
6.) You will hear the servo/motor spin for a few seconds.
7.) Yellow Parking Brake light will display on the dashboard.
8.) Tap ignition button once to turn the ignition OFF.
Do your brake job as normal; Treat the rear calipers as you would a front. Do NOT rotate the caliper piston.
After the rear brake job is done, reactivate the EPB with the following steps:
1.) Turn ignition ON without starting engine (tap ignition button twice without touching any pedals)
2.) Note that Yellow Parking Brake light is displayed on the dashboard.
3.) Press Accelerator pedal to FLOOR.
4.) Pull UP on EPB switch.
5.) With Accelerator pedal to FLOOR and EPB switch UP, use another hand to tap the ignition button 3x.
6.) You will hear the servo/motor spin for a few seconds.
7.) Yellow Parking Brake light will clear off the dashboard.
8.) Tap ignition button once to turn the ignition OFF.

Thank You for the Tip, seeing the calipers already maxed out on the rears and I couldn’t get it in service mode so by doing that I saved BIG Time not having to replace those calipers, with removing the servo I was able to reconnect the bolt to the piston and retract it, it wasn’t easy!
Yeah and I’ll agree, you have a nice set up there!! Have a great day!

Hello have you ever seen the "Front Radar Sensor System Malfunction" and/or "Smart Brake System Malfunction" on the dash board warnings?

Well I should have looked this up before…I have done plenty of brakes but the rear brake GS always been a drum brake. I didn’t realize there was plastic back there and when I put my c clamp on with my backer board I hear “crack” I didn’t put a out of pressure so I sealed it up and took that part off. I thought it would compress like a regular dang piston but nope. I was all mad and made a mess. Put the old pads back on bled the system and was about to buy a new caliper. Thanks for the video and I screenshot the advice to maintenance mode as well.

I have seen other methods where they put the brakes in service mode and it retracts the piston for you. Are you aware of this?

Do you have to put the car in service mode before you started?

No need to take the EPB motor apart or manually turn the actuator for it...the EPB can be put in a 'maintenance mode'...at least it can on my 2017 CX-9. This is the procedure:
integrated EPB system caliper servicing without a scan
Mazda provides a non-scan tool option for 2016/2017 CX-5s to retract the integrated caliper back for service, that is very similar to the process for Fords.
service mode:
1. Switch the ignition ON, and don’t touch the brake pedal (the engine must be off throughout the procedure).
2. Release the EPB. Note Steps 3 and 4 must be done within five seconds.
3. While simultaneously pressing the accelerator pedal down fully, and pressing the EPB switch and holding both, switch the ignition OFF. You need to hold both the accelerator and EPB switch in this position during the next step.
4. Switch the ignition ON, while maintaining the depressed pedal and EPB switch.
5. Release the accelerator and switch. If you have done everything correctly you should hear the caliper motors retracting. The yellow parking brake symbol with exclamation point will now be illuminated, indicating you are now in maintenance mode.
6. Switch the ignition off.
NOTE: Mazda does not want the piston rotated when servicing the caliper, just pushed back. Rotating the piston may damage the caliper internal parts.
service mode:
1. Switch ignition ON, engine off. Note Steps 2 and 3 must be done within 5 seconds.
2. While simultaneously pressing the accelerator pedal down fully, and pulling up on the EPB switch and holding, switch the ignition OFF. You need to hold both the accelerator and EPB switch in this position during the next step.
3. Switch the ignition ON, while maintaining the depressed pedal and EPB switch.
4. You should hear the caliper motors performing the automatic adjustment and the yellow warning light should go out, indicating maintenance mode has ended. Release the accelerator and switch.
5. Switch the ignition OFF.

I love that you care enough to show is this. You might not know this but a portion of the population (including me) will get motion sickness with this kind of video that moves around. Sadly I am not about to watch 2 min of this video before I feel the need to vomit. Just a head up if you can, keep camera fix position as much as possible. Ty either way

Hello Andrew, thank you for this video that helps DIY ppl like me learning a lil more everyday and this way gaining more independance in our daily life! unfortunatly i haven't been able to watch it ! shortly after 30 sec following the first steps i nearly trew out because of the moving image.. it gives me vertigo and makes me fill so dizy like after spending all day on a boat shaked by the wind and waves on a see that if i dont stop watching ... after barely 30sec my face turns pale and must run to the bathroom before the carpet gets ruined ! Please set your camera at some place where its not going to move ! many thanks;

Great video! I was just quoted $414 PER AXLE from my Mazda dealer for the brakes (!!!) on my 62k 2016 CX-9 so I'm going to do it myself. I have to do the fronts as well as the rears (3mm depth limit) along with the rotors. You wouldn't happen to know if the front caliper brackets use 14mm as well do you? Any idea what the next step after removing the pads would be to get the rotors off? Thanks!

Nice video. Just got a cx9 and the brakes are new so this will give me insight for the future maintenance that I’m sure the dealership would say it won’t be covered under warranty!
