Catfishing Scammers in Sri Lanka

I find out just how easy it is to bump into tourist scammers in Colombo, Sri Lanka. I met one within minutes of walking down a street in the Fort area. Rickshaw drivers and street hustlers stroll the streets all day looking for foreigners to rip off. Do not go anywhere with strangers on the street!

With Rs. 4, 800 you can almost go halfway across the country from the West to East, it’s really quite disappointing to see that these “Friendly strangers” take advantage of tourists so easily.

Even as Sri Lankans we also get scammed like this. Thanks for bringing these into lights, and letting people know that they can always use UBER and prevent these situations.

I myself is a Srilankan and am grateful that you made this. People like this destroy my countries reputation and there’s nothing for us to do. Thanks to people like this, foreigners look even at good locals suspiciously! Once again thanks for this video mate!

1:08 That subscriber spotting you in the beginning was so chill. One of these days, Karl will become so famous that he just won't be able to make scam videos for us, cause everywhere he goes somebody's gonna know him.

Don't pay for the tuk tuk unless they have a meter. It is mandatory by law in Colombo. For one killo meter it is around 50 rupees ( edited : actually its 60-70 after petrol price hike) . Great job by educating others and waking up the sleeping officials.

As a Sri Lankan I can tell you that no local in Sri Lanka would actually bother to show a foreigner around the city in a guy's rickshaw during his lunch break like that guy did. Most people wouldn't even bother to come up to a foreigner and say Hi.

if you encounter someone who comes up to you telling about the places you can visit in the city without you even asking is absolutely a guy who wants to milk you out of your money.

On the other hand if you ask someone who's walking down the street for directions or advice most people would happily help.

Stay safe.

I was born in the UK, my dad is British and my mum is Sri Lankan. I look just like a regular caucasian rando, but I can speak fluent sinhala, as well as being pretty good at reading and writing sinhala (I've always considered myself more Sri Lankan than I am British, even if my appearance contradicts it). I've started doing this too every time I go back to visit family, it's hilarious to see their reaction!

අපේ හරකෙක් ගම කාලා නේද සගෝ 🤣🤣🤣

Most of the tourists doesn’t reveal these kind of scams that they have to faced in a different country.
You’re very brave man 👍
As a sri lankan, I never knew such things happen in colombo 🙆🏻‍♂️
Normally tuk tuk drivers charge foreigners double sometimes more than that.
always ask them to turn on the meter or use Uber or Pick Me ( Pick Me is Sri Lankan version of Uber )
Reveal more scammers in Sri Lanka. Always show their faces as well.
I’m happy to see someone like you stand against Scams around the world
🇱🇰❤️

Oh...this shitty people spoil the country's good name and image.

As a local, I apologize on behalf of all Sri Lankan's for the trouble you faced. You did bravo. Don't afraid, don't get panic. Any tourist coming t SL, if you face such an incident and make your voice out, there will be hundreds of Sri Lankan people on your side to protect you against those scammers. Don't afraid. Ask for a help.

Karl, If you can please send the footage to foreign ministry or Police head quarters (not to a local station) to take actions against those people and similar rising scammers.

Enjoy your visit!

Hi Karl, I'm a big fan of yours, and I watch your videos. This one just blew my head off. I'm a Sri Lankan living in Canada for about 39 years. I haven't been back home since. But seeing this scam, it's mind boggling. We are planning on going to Sri Lanka next year, (God willing), and thank you for exposing this.

Thank you so much for exposing these scammers Karl. We, locals are also tired of them. Be careful from scammers trying to get sympathy by telling sob stories. Requesting money is always coming after a sob story.
