I am a 20+ year customer of Generac and can honestly say they are worth every penny! I have purchased 4 systems, I was in the Army and moved a bit, I currently have a 24Kw system on my farm that provides all the back up power I need to operate the farm. The longest outage I experienced was in Michigan in February, 14 days. Think of your Generac System as "Life Insurance!"

We love our QS27kw. It is liquid cooled and runs at 1800 rpm. Yes it cost 6k more than the 22kw air cooled. But for extended outages the 1800 rpm generators are the way to go.

The additions of the 24KW and now the 26KW really bring some affordable full-home power to more homes. I purchased a 27KW QS series about 12 years ago, as I wanted to be able to run everything we had in a 4500sqft home.. all AC units, pool equipment, etc. At the time, it was the only option for us in that power range. I don't regret it, as the QS series is fantastically robust and quiet, but it came with a considerably higher price tag that these 22-26KW units.

TO all perspective byers thinking of purchasing a Generac Generator ----BEWARE. We live in Florida home of the latest very destructive hurricane Ian. Six years ago we bought a Generac Generator as well as the extended 10-year warranty on all parts and labor . Naturally we believed we could rely on same, sadly, to our detriment. For short periods of outage ( 3-4 hours ) it worked beautifully, for longer periods of time it just quit. This also occurred during Irma five years ago at which time it was repaired with on problem. We complied with their request to send them a copy of the maintenance log we kept [ changing oil and plugs ] and, now, we are being told it does not meet their requirements. As a result they are refusing to honor their warranty.

This might be a silly question, but I read constantly of people purchasing multiple units over the years. I get it, nothing last forever. What is the average life expectancy one can expect from a Generac generator that has been properly maintained?

I have one of these. The engine ran low on oil and it wouldn't start. I suggest anyone with one check the oil level at least once a month.
There is also an oil drain tube (easy to use) in case you put in too much. If you put in too much and don't drain excess it is passed out the exhaust and ruins the muffler.

Make sure you have the updated firmware that gives you a 12 minute exercise time on the generator. A 5 minute exercise time is not sufficient to remove water from the oil unless you're living in a very dry area. Oil will absorb water. Part of the purpose of regular exercise is to get the oil hot to drive the water out. Unless your generator is being used in an actual back up mode frequently, make sure exercises for 10 - 12 minutes once per week.

The specifications of the 26 kW unit show a slight reduction in fuel consumption over the 24 kW. Is this a misprint ? If it's true, is the extra cost of the 26 kW worth it even if you don't need the extra 2 kW of power?

I’m considering buying one after another 2 days power outage due to winds and fires in California. It’s not cheap to install and maintain. What a disaster. Seems like power outages are more normal and regularly occurring. This wasn’t true 10 years ago.

Besides those upgrades, and the extra 2k of the 26kw, is there a difference in software upgrades?

Thanks

Bought a new 22K Generac in Dec-22. The engine was bad right out of the box. It took 2 months to get a new engine.

We went thru the process of having someone come and measure for a Generac. Got a letter from them, said welcome! Had the money in cash to pay for it and never heard from them again. Don’t think much of their customer service. Guess they didn’t want to help.

The 26 kw Generac is underpowered and derates to 22.5 on NG. Also main breaker is only 110 amp. Briggs and Stratton is a better unit with derating only to 24 on NG and a 125 amp breaker as well as a standard 10 yr warranty! Briggs has more motor starting capacity and uses less fuel.
