Episode 149: Symptoms Of Kidney Disease: Recognizing the invisible symptoms of a Chronic Illness. Licensed Clinical Social Worker Lana Lipe discusses the importance of treating the invisible parts of an illness. Chronic Kidney Disease patients often appear to be healthy on the outside, but things are not as they appear on the inside. Lana will help those with a chronic illness, like Kidney Disease, understand the importance of recognizing symptoms and when things just "aren't right" and require further attention.

Lana Lipe is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and founder of Honu Therapy Services, LLC. She is a private practice therapist in Honolulu, Hawaii who helps adult clients living with: chronic conditions, grief, loss, stress, trauma, anxiety, depression, perfectionism, as well as gender identity & sexual orientation exploration.

Lana earned her Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Maryland School of Social Work in 2017.

She has over six years working in healthcare and non-profit settings to include: a skilled nursing facility and nursing home, a non-profit Chronic Kidney Disease agency, and 4 intensive care units (ICUs). During this time, Lana has worked with countless patients and their families as they navigate the challenges associated with critical illness, chronic illness, and end-of-life care. She has extensive training in crisis intervention, grief counseling, end-of-life planning, advocacy, intersectionality and health equity & trauma-informed care.

During her time as an ICU Social Worker in a level-one trauma hospital, Lana helped co-create a Critical Incident Stress Management team (CISM) that was implemented hospital-wide.

In addition to her work as a healthcare professional, Lana’s work has been published in The New Social Worker Magazine. She has been featured as a recurrent guest mental health expert on James Fabin’s Chronic Kidney Disease Channel—Dadvice TV. Her work has also been featured in numerous other online publications.

As of October 2021, Lana has completed training as a Certified Grief Educator with world-renowned grief expert, David Kessler.

Hi James! My wife is a ckd patient, stage 3b. She watches your program every chance she gets. Susan felt high anxiety & depression after being diagnosed 3 yrs. Ago. She's TERRIFIED at the thought of dialysis, as this killed her mother the very first time she was given this treatment. The very first time she found you on line, she got a spark back in her eyes & has had newfound hope! God Bless You for all you do for ckd patients, James. It means more than you could ever know....Gary & Susan.

James, you are so honest with your struggles which is why the Dadvice community appreciates you! Would it be possible for you to ask your doctor if you can take the pill at night before bed instead of during the day? Just a thought because you probably already thought about this and discussed with your doctor.😊

I can understand how you feel, when people say you look fine to me ! It’s something that people cannot see think ur just lazy or it’s all in ur head. They have no flipping idea what one goes through with any disease! But they need to understand not all diseases can be seen it’s internal with ones body. People need to be more understanding with others who have a diseases to illnesses. There is internal and external diseases.
