I've always put it like this: I don't want my T's to hold me, so I never hold them.

In addition to defensive bites, I’d also be concerned about a tarantula with an aggressive feeding response biting if touched without warning, thinking you might be prey. I am sure to touch my tarantulas with a paint brush to test their disposition before I ever try to handle one.

I've experienced a tarantula bite from an Aphonepelma Seemani about a year ago but it was very minor and all I felt was a tingling in my hand and no other symptoms came about it. Just thought I'd share this experience with all of you here on this channel

The poisonous/venomous thing always gets me. I'm always having to explain the difference to people. "You know what I mean!" Well say what you mean, then!

Glad you got the video out given the circumstances. Every time I think of tarantulas and faces, I’m reminded of this one lady in the Facebook group who had posted that her daughter wanted to “kiss” her tarantula and ended up with very swollen and irritated lips. Poor girl, albeit cute in its own messed up way.

There used to be a youtube channel called tarantulaguy 76 - the owner of that channel got bit twice by pokies (p.ornata and p.regalis I believe). The symptoms he described were absolutely unreal.

That bit about checking your shoes is all to real to me. Recently I left my shoes outside in the grass. And after 2 hours or so I went to get them and they were full of slugs.

Great video Richard. I've had my tarantulas almost two years now and so far haven't even come close to a bite because I respect my t's. 😊

Thank you so much for what you and the people you work with are doing !!! I’m 61 years old and I’m so fed up with trying to explain to people that spiders are not evil Back during the 90 s when every teenage kid just “ had” to have a tarantula I can’t tell you how many I rehabbed and rehomed! From rose haired to fire haired to orange knee and on and on! I’m not sure what the true names for them were, that’s just what they got sold as from pet stores. Back then we didn’t have computers like we do now. I’m now married to a man who is scared of spiders ( go figure) lol so I don’t have anymore. I am so happy that your speaking out with the truth about these awesome creatures ! Again thank you !!

I’m glad you mentioned the importance of washing thoroughly with soap and water as a first step. I have tarantulas and cats, and work at a kennel, and I can say with complete confidence that a bite from something with sharp, tapered fangs like a cat or tarantula is way more dangerous than something more blunt and made for ripping like a dog. Never underestimate just how far from the initial site a pair of fangs like that can go. The holes left behind might be small, but they make deep grooves underneath that create a *perfect* environment for bacteria to infect.
Wash thoroughly, with soap, water, and apply antibacterial ointments over the next few days as well. Keep an eye out for any unusual swelling, coloring, or stiffness, and if you see that, contact a doctor immediately. Just because it looks like a small injury on the surface doesn’t mean it can’t become an emergency in just a few days.
Great video as always!! And especially helpful to show folks that think tarantulas are deadly, viscious predators out to get them. They’re really just hanging around, and aren’t gonna bite unless provoked (if even that! My T’s have flicked hairs but never even given a bite pose)

I'm always mindful of my pet T's and it's my job to make them feel safe and secure and not do anything to make them defensive with me but they are sensitive way more than us humans if some prods us it's not nice but imagine how they would feel and how long they would recover from stress respect is the key and if we show them it we won't have any problems. If you keep your shoes etc outdoors put some old socks over the opening of the show so no critters can get in and hide it's a survival trick to stop unwanted bites from things if they they get in them. Awesome video as always.
