I'm German. You're pretty much right. The energy prices rise.
This is not just due to the war and the shift to more expensive LNG gas. It's also because of the shift to renewables that is forced by government while still ending nuclear energy.
Since our geography is not well suited for renewables, there are huge additional costs to make them work. And we rely heavily on coal which is the only big backup energy source.
In EU the CO2 taxation is planned to increase further and all signs indicate that energy costs will rise further.
In my view, this will end the german industry model. We want to improve into a high tech industry but since US is already attraction chip giants and our education system struggles it's quite unclear if or how much we will succeed.

Many people talk about a deindustrialization of Germany these days. I think they fairly overestimate the influence of energy prices in the overall economy. Germany had already a strong performing economy before gas pipelines from Russia have been built and it will find alternative ways to run business again. This is not the first time a business model had to be changed and it won't be the last.

Germany has natural gas in contrast to popular belief. The country can be self sufficient for about 50 to 60 years. German politicians don't want to see it extracted from the ground for two reasons: 1) They believe in climate change and this homegrown gas is the only gas they can guarantee to stay away from the atmosphere. 2) Germany exports far to much products and has therefore a huge trade imbalance. Therefore it needs to import something and that is energy and raw materials.

Oh, how I was looking forward to hearing your responses in the light of what Jake Broe (the marvellous YouTuber who’s interview switched me on to you, sir) is referring to as, “Tanks Giving Day.” I knew that the implications of this decision are laden with a ton of complex baggage. I find I cannot even write a simple comment to summarise all the issues that spring to mind! But, that’s what you are for: to express that deeper, policy laden, analysis and to help us form our conclusions through a deeper knowledge.
Your value cannot be weighed in gold. I’m sincerely grateful for the fact that people like you are here at times like this. ✌️👍🇺🇦

Excellent video, Paul. Many people do not appreciate the radical changes in foreign policy that the last 12 months have brought upon Germany. There have been outcries of frustration about Germany's lack of immediate support for Ukraine. You have helped to clarify the process that is taking place within Germany. Thank you.

I think you're right here 8:15 about Ukraine's natural resources and that Ukraine and Germany as well as other partners will benefit from investing in it as the war ends. Ukraine still has a large natural gas pipeline network which also makes this idea appealing, if we're talking gas here of course 😄
