Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) is surging, with breakthroughs in regional and EU-wide elections. Party leader Alice Weidel says her goal is national power, eyeing the 2029 federal elections.

Despite its growing support, the AfD’s vision of foreign policy remains little known around the world. So in this new special report, DW takes a forensic microscope to the party’s blueprint for Germany’s future.

What this reveals is the party’s profound skepticism about the key Western alliances — NATO and the EU — and an outspoken openness to a Eurasian outlook, fostering deeper relations with Russia and China and the international institutions they lead, from the Belt and Road Initiative to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and the Eurasian Economic Union: prime sources of prestige for Vladimir Putin in Moscow and Xi Jinping in Beijing.

In exclusive interviews with Alice Weidel, foreign policy spokesman Matthias Moosdorf and powerful ideologue Björn Höcke, DW’s Richard Walker and Rosalia Romaniec scrutinize the AfD’s views on Germany’s alliances and NATO Article 5 commitments to the Baltic states and Poland, its skepticism of the United States, possible future architectures for European defense, who should have nuclear weapons, future ties with Russia and China, and how Germany should act in a Taiwan conflict scenario.

Includes analysis from leading international experts on Russia, China, the US and Europe: Alexander Gabuev (Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center), Amanda Hsiao (International Crisis Group), Katarzyna Pisarska (Warsaw Security Forum), Peter Rough (Hudson Institute), and Judy Dempsey (Carnegie Europe).

The problem is you people spend more time condemning the opposition instead of working towards correcting those policies that’s attracting the German people to it.

The music isn't dramatic enough, so I'm not 100% sure what DW News wants me to think...

What's with the over-dramatic underlying music.

Dw never say that the failure of their loved political parties lead to the rise of AFD.... instead of criticizing AFD why don't dw talk about the failure of the current government in listening to the public...

It's so funny that you're trying to pass off these analysts from places like Hudson Institute and Carnegie as "independent observers". The Carnegie Endowment was literally headed by a former CIA director, William Burns just a few years ago. These organizations are anything but independent, they are deeply entrenched in Permanent Washington or what many people call "The Swamp". And make no mistake, they do have vastly different interests from the German people or any other nation in Europe. That's why they vehemently opposed and (ultimately destroyed) Nord Stream, needlessly antagonized Russia and China, sabotaged peace negotiations between the Russians and Ukrainians when the war started and the list goes on. They basically use us as chess pieces in their geopolitical games and most European politicians never call them out, never ever push back. AfD politicians have a spine and point out the obvious, that's what attracts so many people to them.

Lower down your "suspicious" sound. It's bad and cannot hear the speakers* properly.

Let's get this straight:
AFD wants Europe to develop its own defenses, rather than rely on the US. According to DW that's bad.
Non-intervention in sovereign states, which is the official United Nations policy, is... bad? Why? Because China supports it.
German policies have led to massive inflation, massive budget expenditures on energy reconfiguration, and massive expenditures on sending arms to a warzone. That violates Germany's own policies which are to avoid supporting sides in warzones. But apparently DW thinks that these new German policies are good, and shouldn't be changed.
Honestly, the scary music is not enough to convince me that Germany should escalate conflict with Russia, rather than seek peace.
How can DW be on the side of military buildup, German subordination to US interests, and against peace??

This so-called journalist Richard Walker is more concerned about the future of US hegemony and NATO. He is a propagandist of US imperialist. Why does DW, the German Public broadcast, hire a British guy Richard Walker, as its international editor? They couldn't find a German guy to do the job. This bears the question, who actually controls DW?

Why is NATO discussed as the only security mechanism in Europe? The EU is not only a political and economic organization; it is also a military alliance. An attack on one EU nation is an attack on all EU nations. The EU should be able to provide its own security architecture, independently of NATO!

In some place Afd positions would be called leftist. Definitely not the far right wing most mainstream media potrayed them. Non intervention is not just a value of China, no intervention in internal affairs of other countries is foundational to ASEAN. Many countries in the region have personal experiences of USA meddling.

The AfD are asking questions that people all over the world are thinking but afraid to ask. These are also questions a free press should be raising, not attacking.

American/British foreign policymakers have always said the worst partnership would be between Russia and Germany because of Germanys manufacturing power and Russias natural resources.

I am now 13 minutes in... and what I have not heard.... the whole reason people vote AfD... And that would be the immigration issue. The current ruling parties can 1:1 adopt the immigration policy of the AfD and thereby 99% cut off support for the AfD while keeping the current policies regarding NATO.
So we must conclude current parties rather sacrifice NATO on the altar of immigration too...

Germany, can’t think of themselves now. They need the US or UK or EU to think on their behalf. Sadness endings.

Apart from their views on immigration, which DW did not discuss here, their views on US dominance and German relations with the East are not very extreme. DW says our experts do not have skin in the game, but all of their guest experts have vested interests.

If the mainstream parties just lower immigration there will be no support for these new parties, just listen to your voters instead of deamonising them.
