It’s when 5 feet of the insulated part is also twisted that gets me.

Read your wire nut packaging...

My rule of thumb for this is if it's a permanent joint, let's say a connection for some outdoor lights in a junction box, I'll always pretty twist. But if it's something like a tail from a light, I'll twist it on as it may not be a permanent fixture as it can be changed

I’ve always pre twisted. And my success rate at wiring things is damn near 100 percent. I’ve had one time where my wire popped out. I see people not do it and it still works but I feel like it’s harder to not do it than do it

ive seen it a few times where the wire nut falls off because the wires were twisted and the nut wouldnt bite/grab the wire. had the issue plenty of times with these two old union guys that came to work with us

It's not a copout. Using them as the manufacturer instructs (no pre twist) still twists what matters together, the copper. No need to have insulation twisted together inches from the wire nut.

Can’t stand when the wires aren’t twisted. We do a lot of exterior light pole repairs, and I can’t stand when I’m pulling a slice out the handhold and the wire nut comes off with a live circuit under load.

I was an industrial sparky and nothing was worst then going into an unmarked 1900 box or JB and removing a wire nut and have wires seperate creating s spark. Yes I know that we should not work in live equipment but have bought my cirvuit tracer to help ID s circuit but had to remove wire nut to instsll tracer alligator clamp. Asking for problems if you fo not pretwist & tape joints on any thing that bibrates, shakes, moisture, etc.

That's why I have Wago lever nuts on me at all times.

Is using a nut twister wrong? I’ve once pretwisted and then used twister and had coworkers find the difference and 1 or 5 could. Never had an issue.

100% agree with this. Listen come on electricians this is part of our job, you may have to untwist some conductors from time to time, but that is what we get paid for. I would rather have to deal with that and have a sloppy connection that some other electrician is going to come behind me and talk about what a crappy job I did and making me look like a terrible electrician, you know when the customer calls another electrician because things keep shorting out or lights keep flickering or whatever the case may be, and now that is an electrician who actually does his wore her job correctly and now makes you look incompetent. Trust me I spend enough time going behind incompetent contractors. And I say this because I am an electrician but I also do hvac, plumbing and many other things, and too many times I see crappy crappy unexcusable work

Learn to use lineman’s can easily straighten out the wire.

All I’ll say is I’ve seen things not work because they weren’t twisted together and were not making proper contact in the marette, I’ve never seen pre twisted joints fail like that

Just follow the directions on the ideal wire nut jug if you put them on correctly they twist even use my lineman’s and give the wire nut some extra twists I’ve learned in this trade there’s more ways than one to skin a cat.

Been in the trade 15+ years . New and service construction with that said never really thought of people who twist or don't twist wire nuts. Just glad I can show up fix or add to it. Don't make a big deal outta it . With that said happy to work on it wire twist or not it's the knowledge that I have been thought to fix or install and make it right.

Twist! And when serviced, cut-off at one use wire nut, re-strip, twist and put a new wire nut!
