The Z vs S twist debate continues!

This short clip was filmed at the Contemporary Hempery harvest celebration at Wakelyn's farm (East Anglia UK) in August 2024. Simon Cooper of Flaxland UK running a natural twist test of unspun hemp and flax.

The thumbnail of the video shows the hook tied on the end of each of the raw fibre lines, and water is being dripped down the lines to activate and see which way the lines want to naturally spin.

Allan Brown and Sharon Kallis can be heard asking questions and making guesses about the "why S twist" for linen.
The video cuts off before any conclusion, but one of the thoughts posed after filming was that the S twist could pre-date drafting- and when fibres were still hand twisted to join before adding twist, that would have been done in a Z twist for the best join, then an S twist would have plied over these joins... the debate continues!
Check out the amazing work happening at the Contemporary Hempery, and and Flaxland UK

Interesting discussion: why do we do things the way we do?
For me the reason for twisting the fibers in a certain direction is because that's the most easy way for my fingers ...
