What is the Catholic Churches Stance on Liberation Theology?

Показать описание
Liberation Theology started in the late 20th century in Latin America with the idea that the Catholic Churches ministry should include involvement in the political struggle of the poor. Liberation Theology believes that God speaks through the poor and that the poor should overthrow the top of society, making it a political movement rather than a spiritual one. Liberation Theology turns away from the fact that Jesus died so that we might have eternal salvation.

This video constitutes a significant misrepresentation of Liberation Theology by claiming that "the poor need to violently overthrow the top of society" and that "this is a strict political movement." It misses the point of Liberation Theology...

The stance taken against liberation theology is based upon political ideology. This is ironic given the claim made in the video that the latter is politically motivated.

Some might call me a far rightist but this presentation makes me defend liberation theology just in terms of its high ideals. It’s always a “no” from these middle of the road Catholics.

But isn’t catholicism in practice a kind of religiously institutional socialism basically? Esp. in areas where it tends to the poor (and suffering because of it)? “If you see your brother without food and a cloak...” and so many more. I just don’t get the difference it’s just a different name, isn’t it? Isn’t it basically about being fair and merciful to everyone?

Nice and clear. I love the emphasis that Pope John Paul II and Benedict XVI grew up under socialist and communist regimes. They knew what they were talking about.

The Catholic Church has never condemned liberation theology in its magisterial teaching.

Pdffff I was hoping to actually learn something about liberation theology. Not hear a highschool level speech from Simeone who probably has never read something "pro" liberation theology.

Judgment is not for us as an individual or society to make but God alone. Liberation theology is the idea in that you do have the power to judge one another and you brethren, and judge accurately to that of which what one deserves and does not deserve. Yes you should absolutely cry out against all injustice however this does not mean you get to wield the power that is the wrath of God and redistribute this wealth. You can surely give alms to the needy with that of your own wealth and time. But what of Lazarus and The Rich Man? Yes what the rich man did was terrible and unjust and should not be stood for. This is why the rich man was eternally damned. No amount of redistribution or societal organization/ change could have given each other what they deserve. Sure you could have given Lazarus a livable and happy life however this still does not address what to do with the rich man. Nothing in this world could possibly give that man to what he deserves, only God can and in the next life. And to extend this nothing you could have possibility implemented could have prevented this. Because the issue is not what one has and does not have but rather a man's spirit. His culpability and contempt for sin which he commits, that of which is the root issue.
