This helped to clarify Lacan concepts of imaginary and symbolic and big other for me more than anything else - coming from an anglo psychoanalytic perspective. The oedipal subject as opposed to the pre-oedipal is a subject brought into the world of narration where we can actually think about what is going on - where there is a higher perspective (big other). In the dyadic situation alone narration is limited and ultimately egocentric and so completely co-opted by the imaginary.

Hello. Great video as always. I am confused by something. If the unconscious is the discourse of the (symbolic) Other, which has to do with language and law, why is it that socially unacceptable desires- like the incestuous oedipal wish- reside/ get pushed back 'there'. DO you see what I mean?
