I’d say 90% of students who get bad grades are struggling because of being overworked, or having to memorize to much.

If a student understands all the material in class, then goes to an hour and a half of an extracurricular, sees friends, comes home, makes dinner, practices and studies for other extracurriculars, does chores, and then still has ~2.5 hours of homework, then they will be stressed; sleep deprived; and will have no free time. If they want free time of sleep, they have to rush homework or not do it at all, each one of the options could ruin a student’s GPA.

Furthermore, there is too much memorization. Math and science are the worst offenders, so I’ll start with them.

There’s a reason almost everyone who took Calculus can’t tell me what a derivative, limit or integral is, and fewer still can solve all three. This is because we prioritize memorization over deep understanding. If instead of having us memorize the 150 rules in an integral table, the professor had shown us patterns and tricks to solve integrals and put the table on tests, many more people could solve an integral. There is no situation in real life in which L’Hôpital will kidnap your family and demand you recite every Calculus theorem. The same goes for science classes after Biology.

Next, all reading/writing is bogged down by endless drafts, revisions, drafts, revisions, edits, drafts, planners, covers, etc.

History also has the memorization issue. Instead of doing critical thinking about historical events, we just need to memorize. Almost every history book is about critical thinking not a memorized list of notes. You don’t need to memorize WW2 History, you can always look it up!

The social sciences also struggle with definitions, you have to memorize instead of applying. In Psychology, for example, I spent 90% of my time memorizing instead of applying my skills.

Language classes get a pass as they depend on memorization.

Game Theory was the best class I ever took, little memorization, cool applications, used it in my real life all the time. If every class was about critical thinking, cool applications, and getting more in-depth instead of being a memorization grind, I think we all would find school more beneficial.

I've been a teacher, and experience taught me:
1. Homeworks are a waste of time. They're ineffective and serve only to make your students more lazy.
2. Making students memorize the answers only makes them cheaters, teach them to find the answer instead.
3. Grades mean nothing, a low grade can be replaced if the student seems ready.
4. Tests only serve to see who needs help with what, not who passes and who doesn't.
5. Short sessions with enough practice is enough, early leaves improve performance, forcing them to stay full time harms it.
6. Don't make it harder for them, make it easier, if they need to learn more they will ask.

The main problem with High School Teachers is that

They're grossly underpaid

there is absolutely NOTHING more motivating than a smarmy, moody teacher who hates their job and doesn’t give a single crap about their students🤩🧚‍♀️🎉✨🥰☀️🌸🌿

This majority video is pretty much a summary of what the teachers of my high school senior year AP classes weren’t and I’m thankful for it. The physics teacher would spend as much time out of class thinking about how to present the information best to her classes as she did teaching the classes and genuinely seemed to enjoy teaching, she also seemed glad that on the rare occasion she made a mistake the students would point it out to her because it showed they were putting in effort on the material just like she was (with the added bonus that it gave a confidence boost to students who brought it to her attention due to the rarity of her mistakes). The Calculus teacher was also deeply invested in helping the students learn and in a way that related back to the real world in an attempt to make it stick, he didn’t spend quite as much time every day thinking about how to approach the lessons as the physics teacher did but he still showed a deep interest in helping the students improve.

I remember during my freshman year one of my teachers just straight up told the entire class "None of you are worth it. In fact, I've never taught a class who were less worth it than all of you"

Dude I had a teacher that treated the class like we were workers instead of students. This man literally yelled at a couple for HUGGING in class like wtf.

That's why I'm so happy with my Psych and Chem teacher this year. They don't focus on memorization, have in depth discussions with us, and actually explain why things are the way they are. And they make the class enjoyable as well

1. I have no ideas how to solve an integral. I'll learn that next year.
2. There are three laws of thermo. First is that change in internal energy equal heat added plus work done on the gas. Second is that entropy of a system will always increase or remain steady and that you can't convert 100% of heat to work. Third is that you can't reach absolute zero.
3. Celluar respiration begins with glycolysis which converts glucose into 2 3-carbon compunds. Then there is the Kreb's cycle and then the electron transport chain where hydrogen ions diffuse through ATP synthase and generate ATP molecules.
