My coach always told me that I should develop sound fundamentals of guard before trying any different variations because working proper technique allows you to for instance fight with low hands and still keep some fundamentals like head movement. But if a fighter jumps straight into a low guard with shitty head movement and positioning, he’s just gunna get worked by a fighter with good fundamentals

As a general rule you should keep your hands up as a beginner. It's good advice and teaches you to be aware of you openings. As you advance you can be more advanced but basics are important!
