Not when a pastor has a mansion, a jet and goes on vacations that I can not afford !!!
But I do give to ministries that do hands on with the community

. At no time were first-century Christians commanded to pay tithes. The primary purpose of the tithing arrangement under the Law had been to support Israel’s temple and priesthood; consequently the obligation to pay tithes would cease when that Mosaic Law covenant came to an end as fulfilled, through Christ’s death on the torture stake. (Eph 2:15; Col 2:13,  14)
As Christians, they were encouraged to give support to the Christian ministry both by their own ministerial activity and by material contributions. Instead of giving fixed, specified amounts to defray congregational expenses, they were to contribute “according to what a person has, ” giving “as he has resolved in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” (2Co 8:12; 9:7)

I tithe not because of the law, but because I truly believe Jesus is my Lord of Savior. I tithe to help the poor and spread the work of my God.

Thank you for the questions and commentary. My responses follow:

Are Christians required to tithe? No. But there's nothing wrong with choosing to do so either. Today's version of tithing earned wages to a "church", or for any form of evangelism, has no biblical precedent so it can't be seen as any biblical act of obedience.

What was tithing? Biblical, systematic (God-required) tithes were taxes that were only submitted as consumable items and were specifically purposed towards the Levitical theocracy, the poor (every 3 years) and for consumption at the festivals (as they occurred). Systematic (God-required) tithes began in Leviticus 27:30 and were facilitated through ceremonial and civil ordinances under Mosaic Law that are now obsolete under the New Covenant (Hebrews 8:13).

How did tithing exist "pre-law"? There's no mention of tithing in the bible prior to Genesis 14 and there's no biblical evidence that Abram's one-time submission of war spoils or Jacob's contingent offer to tithe was required by God. Jacob's contingent offer to tithe serves as evidence that systematic (God-required) tithing didn't exist at that time or prior. However, there's historical evidence tithing was a pagan practice even before the bible and during. What Cain and Able submitted were offerings, not tithes. The two are not the same. The "first fruits" were heave offerings, not systematic tithes.

How did tithing exist "post-law"? There's no biblical evidence Jesus required tithing under the New Covenant or any mention that the prior tithing ordinances had been amended to include money as a tithe deliverable. There's also no biblical evidence that Jesus ever tithed, received a tithe or left any instructions on how anyone would do so after his resurrection. In Mathew 23:23 Jesus is chastising the Pharisees while defining legalistic tithing as something less than moral, spiritual issues. The Pharisees were only tithing consumable items as the law required at the time, and this was prior to the New Covenant which rendered the Old Covenant system of atonement and the ceremonial and civil ordinances such a tithing under Mosaic Law, obsolete.

The book of Malachi must be read in context. In Malachi 1:6 and 2:1 the narrative is confined to the Levitical Priests. Only Levites could enter the temple storehouse. The tithe indictments in chapter 3 can not be universally applied either historically or currently and none of those indictments had anything to do with money, although there's ample evidence money existed and wages were earned during those times (Haggai 1:6). The "floodgates of heaven" has nothing to do with money. It's a reference to rain, which would naturally increase crops of produce. Only consumable items were accepted as a biblical, systematic tithe deliverable.

God isn't a mob boss or a slot machine. So no, I can't agree that tithing is intended to release a supernatural favor from God. The Prosperity Gospel is nonsense and it ends up exploiting the very people we should be helping. There's no biblical minimum or limit to what we can give, but we are free to give, not bound to pay.

Any church that is open requires funds to operate. The electricity, water, and heating are not free. Jesus said give unto Ceasar the things that are Ceasar's, give unto the Lord the things that are the Lord's. You can't outgive the Lord. I have no problem with tithing even in my retirement.

Paul was a faithful and zealous Jew who was against Christian and persecuted the church. He was a follower of the law including tithing. But when he was converted he didn’t talk or teach tithing but generous giving. The more you give the more you receive.

If we are New Testament believers. Why we leave out all the Old Testament law and we picked only tithe and bring it to the New Testament law. The bible say if you believe in one part of the law you have to believe the whole law. You can’t believe in one part of the law and leave out the rest of the law. This is the problem with going to Bible School. To many different teachings and we don’t know who is right and who is wrong. At the end of the day they only confused us with their theology. The best Bible School is the Holy Spirit who will teach us and help.

All thanks to God for leading Brother Tiff in this ministry. The Holy Spirit is using him mightily to clarify some challenges that Christians face in understanding the word of God. May God continue to use him to the Glory of God.

To teach tithing to new testament gentile believers is a heresy and is a method of extorting money. New testament believers only gave ( and gave generously) to meet each other's needs. Acts2v42-47 and Acts4v32-37
