The original Ninja Turtles wasn't a kids comic but quite gritty and more for a mature audience. Their was a series on Dark Horse comics as well went from Black and White to color. The names came from a book of famous artists that Splinter found. The story also had origins with a Daredevil type character who was just hinted in the first comic. Eastman and Laird sold the rights to their brand and marketed for kids. I remember readung it when I was into comics as a kid.
