The 2024 Volkswagen Touareg R uses a 250kW/335hp V6 engine plus a 100kW electric motor to give big hybrid power.

Rivals to the Touareg R include the BMW X5 xDrive50e and Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid, plus the Mercedes GLE, Audi Q7 and Q8 and other luxury SUVs.

The 2024 Touareg lineup will be released in Australia in May 2024.

140k. This is just completely out of hand at this point.

No space tire that's so great when traveling around Australian roads. I've had 3 flats in the past 2 years 2 from construction sites in Sydney and 1 from a pothole heading north. What are they thinking

Currently have a 2020 190 Rline. Excellent vehicle with no AdBlu and a 90 litre tank. Recent 12k reduction in current models had me tempted, but if you get most of the add on bits as standard in the new model, then i'll wait. The petrol R was in sight, but what fuel does it run on. If I am towing in remote country areas, not easy to get my tank filled with premium. Not wanting to swap my 7l per hundred setup for 9l per hundred. What is the ball weight on this model. Current spec is 260kg, but add x kg of batteries and we will probably be limited to towing box trailers.

Lots of quality and tech improvements but this has bumped the price way too high. Regardless of price i really like that Lapiz Blue !

When you get to test this vehicle, could you comment on your memories of the old diesal driving experience. I have some reservations on the reduced boot space, smaller fuel tank, lack of spare tyre, extra weight and how many times would one have to charge the battery on say a trip down the Newel highway or out to out to Longreach.

Smaller than it looks, which is good. Functional & classy while staying under the proverbial radar. Brighter colours would be a bonus. How about testing while towing a caravan? Cheers

1:19 There is a mix of platforms in this intro, the Urus and Cayenne are based on the Q5 platform not Q7.

It looks nice though all that black gloss plastic would do my head in. No spare tyre is a no go in this big country. Could put a spare in the cargo area though.
Price of a lot of these cars makes my new top spec CX5 turbo look like a bargain 🚙

When can we expect the povo model - the 170TDI? Because it looks like it will be worth waiting for instead of buying a runout, even considering the $12K discount.

To me the hold back of going hybrids is that while driving in electric only, if more power is needed for any reason, a screaming motor kicks in.
An electric only Touareg would be good.

Everythings good till you look at the asking price of these mass market EU vehicles and realise they are horrible value.

Are they still fitted with those awful capacitive touch steering wheel buttons or have they gone back
To real buttons like Volkswagen said they would?

Really wish the R came with a spare tyre 😭

I bought one of these in 2019 for £54k and now it’s priced at £75k in the uk. No thanks but expensive for a Vw. In general prices have gone crazy in the uk.

Another great review from my favourite Dr Who.

Range and charging time aside, how long/how fast does the battery start to deteriorate? The new tail light design cheapens the look of the car which is a shame. Suspect very poor resell value. The TDi version might still be the better choice. The 4.0 tdi was a real monster with power and efficiency but they had to drop it to meet the regulations...

I am so pissed that VW didn't put the technology and Interior Design of these Touaregs into the Arteon. Its pretty sad those are totally based upon the Passats despite offering upper middle class size and space. It was somehow wasted potential and now as always the only really luxury VW is a Touareg which is certainly not ideal for long range fast speed travelling etc. Not a big fan of SUVs despite liking the Touareg.

Thanks for your review. I support the introduction of any PHEV products from any brand. So, I urgently suggest Volkswagen introduce more PHEV models to their "affordable models", especially at the entry specs.

That gaping grille extending under the headlights ruin the front end completely (although this generation was never a looker)

Not having a 3rd row is NOT a negative as you say.
The overwhelming majority of SUV owners have NO NEED for a 3rd row.
Every 3rd row should be an option. There should never be a standard 3rd row.
Well done VW!
