When it comes to medium-sized SUVs, there's one that stands out from the rest. CarAdvice compares the 10 best selling SUVs on the segment to find out which SUV is the best on-road, which is the safest SUV and which SUV is the best value.

We compare:
00:00 Introduction
03:40 - 2019 Subaru Forester
06:50 - 2019 Honda CR-V
10:01 - 2019 Holden Equinox
13:17 - 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid
15:58 - 2019 Kia Sportage
19:16 - 2019 Nissan X-Trail
22:11 - 2019 Renault Koleos
25:57 - 2019 Hyundai Tucson
29:54 - 2019 Mazda CX-5
33:28 - 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan

Note: The RAV4 hybrid is presently subject to a several-month waiting list due to demand, and certain hybrid versions within a particular VIN range are on temporary stop-sale as a regenerative braking issue is sorted out. This broke after we'd done the testing, but given a fix is imminent we did not deem it appropriate to take the win from Toyota.

Canadian here - I tested a lot of SUV's and ended up picking the CX-5. Interior is super nice, a lot of great safety features standard, the price was great, and it has a regular automatic transmission -not a crappy CVT.

The chemistry between these 2 guys is horrible. The driver just keeps talking about what he's interested in and the passenger tries to hold a conversation with him. It's like holding a conversation with a teenager with the attention span of 2 syllables

Wow mike, let a seasoned professional like Paul speak. Constantly talking over while he speaks! Car advice ain't what it used to be since fairfax took over.

Was it me or does Mike constantly interrupt or talk over the top of Paul? Gee wiz Mike, let the man finish his sentence.

The difference is the Subaru can actually go offroad. It is also quite reliable. The CVT is ok as long as you change the fluid. The engine is also perfectly fine. It is just a vehicle for buyers that like to explore the mountains and its certainly my choice.

I think there is a big misunderstanding of so called segment. Most people have a budget limit ahead of segment choice. A base fwd cx9 was 44k driveway a couple of years ago, paying near 45k for any of these smaller suvs don't make much sense. IMO medium SUV should be around 33-40k drive away, where manufacturers have to make smarr compromises to deliver best value for money. And I think FWD mid spec hybrid Rav4 Or base Subaru Forester are two stand outs in the lower price bracket.

Great vid, fellas, loved the format but one minor fact check; you blokes are probably too young to remember but Subaru had 4wd cars in Oz long before the CRV was even a twinkle in the eye of Mr Honda! I think the first ones arrived in the early ''70s. My first was a 1983 Touring Wagon with a 1.8 litre engine, 3, count 'em, 3 speed auto with push-button selectable 4wd and digital dash. Did a tour in '84 with 3 adults, 2 dogs, fully loaded roof rack and trailer up the coast from Brisbane (including 3 days on Fraser Island) to Cairns and across to Normanton in the gulf. From there straight down through western Queensland to Wagga Wagga, NSW, dropped off 2 adults and a dog and headed for Tassie where we got smacked by a motorhome and ended up turned turtle in a shallow Creek. End of trip.
Sigh.... I loved that roof rack!!

Hello from Denmark.
Nice review. Just want too give you some fun facts from this end off the world.

1. In Denmark Subaru is the most expensive car in this group .
2. Renault is one off the best selling cars here in Denmark.
3. The VW R-line with that engine cost $146.000 (688.000 dkr.)

The music while talking is distracting and annoying.in Canada the cx5 is least expensive in top trim over the rest of the ones we sell

Bought a 2011 Ford Escape. $11, 455 out the door. 3.0 v6, 240hp. 34k miles. Makes my 2018 Forester look like a Fart Knocker. Was a city utility or inspector's car since there was ZERO cigarette smoke odor and only the passenger seat had slight side bolster wear. The rest of the seating areas were unused.

It would be good if you could put the time links for each car review, instead of just listing the times as plain text. Keep up the good job 👍

In the beginning of this review you stated that cabin noise insulation was one of the parameters that you would evaluate (2.56 min, Comfort). Then there was no comment of it trough out the video. So which of these SUVs are the most quiet?

3:01 very correct. Hope you incorporate this thinking of hiding practicality in your reviews of non sport vehicles

So comprehensive. Love the coverage of all the cars. If you ask me we need the same for passenger sedans. Civic/Corolla/Mazda 3/Golf.

Great idea to review this format, mammoth effort guys. Would have loved to see Skoda in there as an alternative to the Tiguan inline with the others. Will you be doing the same for the wagon / estate segments? The more I read about SUVs the more I think the offerings of an old school wagon provide better value.
