"In the midst of battle, when chaos reigns and fear grips the heart, remember this: the true battlefield lies within oneself. Conquer the doubts, the temptations of weakness, and the tumult of emotions. For it is not the external foe that defines victory, but the inner strength and resilience of the warrior's spirit." - Marcus Aurelius

I loved when Dr Beard warned us not to get too smug about Rome and their slaves because WE HAVE INVISIBLE PEOPLE TOO. Brilliant and empathetic! Dr Beard is the best historian!

Mary is such a hero of mine, I could listen to her all day long. I went to Pompeii and Herculaneum 2 weeks ago, long long time dream realised it was truly amazing. Mary and Bettany Hughes are brilliant historians. Imagine meeting them 😮❤

If you want to learn anything about the Roman Empire, Mary Beard is the person to watch. She is MAGNIFICENT.
Dr. Beard brings history to life and while she does this, she invites us to question issues of civics, ethics, economics, politics, sociology. I could go on... just watch her.

I also love Mary's enthusiastic approach as she explains to the viewer while she wanders through time on her adventures, especially in Rome. I replay her programmes at night when my world is quiet. Ancient History was my best subject at school and my inquisitive mind is always on the alert for more learning.

This is by far the best history lesson I have had for a while. Went out for a coffee break half way thu the video and returned for the next 2 hrs feeling refreshed and ready for more. Mary Beard keeps the ball rolling so well, making this 4 hr marathon a pleasure to watch.

I’ve watched this documentary so many times that I’ve lost count. Mary has me hooked the whole time! It would be amazing to pick her brain, listen to a lecture of hers in person, she makes learning about Ancient Rome even more interesting and exciting than it already is (to me, at least) 😊 Thank you, Mary

Mary Beard is incredible, and thanks to her, I have learned that the history of Rome is endlessly compelling. The colonial-imperial model of empire was perfected in a special way by Rome, and is iterated to this day by would-be conquering entities. It is the context we live in, the water we swim in. Beard’s expert appreciation is such a good education for all of us laypeople.

Wish I could travel the sites with her, because so many of the really intriguing places that she peruses are almost devoid of any other people, so she has the place to herself and that seems to lend a sense of discovery to the whole experience. She’d be a fascinating travel companion.

One minor contrasting opinion to a statement on Boudicca, perhaps she was a brutal leader because the Romans took everything from her...they flogged her...they RAPED her DAUGHTERS...her own children...this wasn't just leading, it was revenge....perhaps had she won, her leadership would have been different than her revenge. Perhaps, Great Britain would have become something entirely different, sure, but it wouldn't necessarily have been bad... because to Romans were brutal too...never ever forget the slaughter they wrought across some of the largest swaths of the world ...just because they created some good things didn't mean they were good...just because Boudicca was brutal in her revenge doesn't mean she was bad....
