Should you breathe out through mouth?
Patrick McKeown explains why mouth breathing is bad.

Respiratory water loss:
- The mean loss of expired water was 42% less by nasal expiration before decongestion than by oral expiration.
- Increased water and energy loss by oral breathing could be a contributing factor to the symptoms seen in patients suffering from nasal obstruction.

I’m 48 years old and have always been a mouth breather. I was never told this was bad for me. When I was a kid a few doctors told me (at regular dental or other checkups) that I had a deviated septum. I was like ok...they never said anything else other than that and then moved on. I didn’t even know what a septum was! Now I know. I have so many issues due to mouth breathing that I never knew: grinding teeth, clicking jaw, terrible sleep, v-shape teetht/jaw instead of u-shape. I’m so pissed off that my doctors never said anything like, “we need to fix that”. All they said was, to a ten year old kid who’s parents had no idea either, was “you have a deviated septum”. Nothing else. They just left it at that and moved on to other things.

I have been doing Nasal Breathing for a few years now and it has been a game changer. I knew when I was breathing through the mouth when under stressful situations but being aware of this can help shift your mood and the energy around you.

Also recently has a lung infection and naturally healed myself incorporating nose breathing techniques.

We use all 4 Chambers of our lungs when nose breathing which fill our cells with Maximum Oxygen to fight viruses and infections.

When breathing through the mouth only 2 chambers of the lungs are pushing oxygen which stresses out the body and also raises cortisol.

Not a lot of people know that we have 4 Chambers where filtered Oxygen is traveling throughout the body

Hello Patrick great content. Does breathing out through the nose only help nitrous oxide production ? Thanks

In my 60s finally learning to breath.
Attention deficit dissorder ( my own conclusion) since I was 4 years old. My poor mom & dad, bouncing off the walls etc. Now riding my bike up hills, when air hunger hits, I make mental adjustments & movements, Im pretty sure my focus has improved.

I can understand why no one would think to tell another that the nose is for breathing, while the mouth is for ingestion and speech. However, it would seem that some parents and teachers have not passed this invaluable bit of folklore on to their young ones.

I want to know in short term is it okay to breath in through nose and breathe out and through mouth. Some breathing pattern especially when the body detected high co2 level naturally breathe out through the mouth (Andrew Huberman told this) and it’s has strong relaxing effect on the body.

Losing more moisture in short term seemed to be negligible when you want to achieve some effect though I’m not sure when we should do it. It’s the batural part of double inhale and one long exhale

What about exercises that instruct you to inhale through the nose and exhale through the mouth? I do a pelvic floor exercise where I breathe in through the nose and make the sound exhale through the mouth so the abdominals contract. Is this Okay?

Mouth breathing is the emergency route for breathing. The only time people should breathe through their mouths is when they are swimming or singing.

I am 27 ...I have been a mouth breather..all my life.... Now very much in control after knowing ..all the harm..that mouth breathing did to me..
First... clearing nose congestion always...( Doing neti most of the time.. sometimes steaming ..)
Starting putting tape on my mouth . Yeah i know it's funny but best decision of my life.. improved my sleep quality plus ...less dry mouth issue..
( Finally help of .. frequencies and subliminals)

Improving lifestyle..
Like stopping habits which increase nasal congestion or swelling..like late night sleeping.. dairy product or cold stuff .
Soon i will do something for teeth alignment.. hopefully..it will help me more to control mouth breathing
I use to suck thumb as a child..plus i have sinus prob..( not anymore..) slowly got rid of sinus issue

I have a deviated cartilage plus i have blocked sinuses and as a result my left nostril is almost always blocked. At night when i go to bed I cannot breathe through my nose at all because its always blocked. I am scheduled to have corrective surgery. Once i have had surgery i plan to tape my mouth up when i go to bed to train myself to sleep breathing through my nose. Will this increase my cardiovascular capacity?, will i increase my VO2 Max if i do this?
