Hello and thanks for tuning into another gear review.
Today I'm reviewing the Esbit titanium folding stove. This little stove is extremely light weight. It weighs in on my scale at .5 oz.
If you add 1 fuel cube and the windscreen that I made it weighs in at 1.1 oz.
The cubes burn for over 12 minutes and burn very hot. However, you do need to use a windscreen as the cube can blow out if its windy.
As I get older I am always looking to lighten my load and now everything new that I get is smaller and lighter and is either made from carbon fiber, titanium or some other kind of material that is very light weight and strong.
It folds down very small and fits just about anywhere inside your pack.
I really enjoy this stove and its performance and would highly recommend going with this stove if your looking to lighten your load and still have a great stove with you in the backcountry.

Was looking to buy one of these so thanks for a helpful review! Here's a tip in return that will hopefully help as well: If you scrap the top of the fuel tab to create a few shavings, much like you would Wetfire, you will get the Esbit to lite much easier. Cheers!

I had a steam engine years ago that ran on Esbit fuel. There is very little smell and it is not unpleasant. I bought an Esbit stove and the slight smell of the fuel brought back memories of my steam engine! The Esbit stoves were used by German solders in WW2 and are still used for emergency stoves all over the world. A great pocket stove with safe fuel. Very little buildup on pots and cups that is easily washed off. Good review!

Good video. I ditched the canister stoves a while ago. Nowadays, I use the esbit System because got tired of the cold affecting the pressure in the canister and wanted to be A much lighter back packer since I’m 57 and getting tired more often than before. I squared a little bit of hand sanitizer on the tablet in order to get it started faster. I have not regretted the change to this new cooking system. So far so good. I speak from the point of view of a legally blind person so alcohol stoves are not a choice for me. I tried other fuel cubes but went back to esbit . Good presentation. God bless you.

Have you tried taking a small knife blade and grind the top of the esbit bit cube to create some esbit powder? Light the powder on top of the cube. I will ignite a lot easier than trying to light a solid block. I like this stove, thanks for the vid.

I've been an "ultralighter" for more than four decades and I bought my first "tablet stove" in the early 70's from a survival equipment company in Oley, PA. As I recall, i wasn't pleased with it but that was because i didn't understand it. Over the years I've used many stoves finally settling on the Snow Peak Gigapower titanium.

Tiring of canisters and even alcohol stoves, I just ordered one of these from REI. I'll let you know what I think of it.

Enjoyed the video. Next year going to hike the Northern part of the AT. This might be the stove I will use

Little disappointing to see that a windscreen is an absolute MUST with this stove. Kinda defeats the purpose. I'll stick with my Esbit Emergency stove. A windscreen helps with that one, but isn't a must-have accessory. Thanks for the honest review.

Hang a quarter of the tablet over the edge of the tray and then you can put the flame under the tablet. Push it back after it's lit with a stick.

Hey bro, do you still use this system? What are your thoughts now?

This is a very cool little burner for the ultralight backpacker, but for some reason, I prefer the classic Esbit burner, maybe because it feels more stable and is better protected from wind.

I recently purchased this stove as well. Are you using anything special to clean the  underside of the pot and stove stand to get the sticky residue off?

Has anyone mentioned breaking the tab and throwing done sparks at it? Webber BBQ makes the same tablets @ 24/$3.50 cheers

Maybe try it in the woods or list how much fuel it takes to boil one or two cups of water.

Thanks for the review!  I'm in the same boat as you...getting older, love my whisperlite, but want something lighter.  Never really considered esbit stoves before, but they seem to fit the simplicity and reliability factor well.  Iv'e played around with "penny stoves", but found them a little finicky...plus I don't like the idea of alcohol leaking in the pack melting all my synthetic gear.  Probably still use the whisperlite for winter snow adventures where melting snow for water is required, the esbit seems like it would struggle in that scenario...thoughts on that?  Thanks again!

Best way to light the cubes if you have no torch lighter or a malfunctioning one, are to use 2 OCU matches and lay the whole match atop the cube and shield with hands. Also shave the cube up like wetfire. Do not try and light the cube like a candle. This stove isn't very robust, so be careful where you pack it. Don't forget to size your pot to this stove.

Getting older? Lol, you are a young guy. Wait until you hit your 50's. ;)

It's easier to light the tab out of the wind .... then place it into the burner

Hi Dan, hey I have found if I hold the esbit fuel cube and just light a corner, they light very well, also scraping the top and hitting it with sparks from a ferro rod works well ...then just lay it into the tray. I have noticed some pots and sets do not fit well on this stove, like the Stanley pot, it has a rounded bottom and will perch oddly and sometimes fall. The GSI Cup tends to hold well and the Coleman Peak and Solo hold well, the Vargo Titanium cup rally seems to fit the best on this stove. I use my stove almost every weekend and have found that the Real Esbit brand cubes work best, those fly by night walmart cubes and those trioxaine military ones do not work well at all. My only complaint is finding an absolute level rock, ground or stump piece to sit it on so the burn is even.

Don't you laugh at all the videos where guys are making alcohol stoves out of Altoid cans?  The Esbit only runs from $ 10-15.

I purchased it and tried it and it failed the test. Negatives: unstable with a small pot of water, can't control heat, not easy to turn off, leaves major black residue on pot. Yes, it is light, but you are only wrestling with about five ounces here as compared to a reliable pocket rocket. Anyway, wasn't for me. Excited about the weight, not happy with inconvenience. Going back to isopro small cannister. I can see using this system in situation calling for least weight possible.
