Thank you for actually circling back to my request! I use the Esbit tablets, and there is another after market tablet that is a smaller rectangle, and whose name I cannot recall. I use the stove while hunting to heat noodles and soup. For the boiling I have had similar results, but I am careful to get the stove out of the wind. This is a great channel, and I second request regarding the ferro rod, I have seen them but I do not know how they work.

This reminds me that I need to revisit my solid fuel stoves, which have mostly been used as stands for alcohol stoves in a pretty long time!

I recently purchased two of the Esbit Pocket Stoves to include in Get Home Bags I am currently building. They arrive Monday via UPS, so I have not had a chance to do a boil/cooking test. Good to know the off brand cubes are insufficient for boiling water. Saves me the time and effort of discovering that for myself. Will definitely stick with the Esbit cubes. Thanks for the assist.

Interesting experiment. Good to know those small tablets aren’t a choice for boiling water. I bought the square esbit stove quite a few years ago. I’ve only used it a couple of times and keep it in an emergency bag. It’s definitely not my go to for outdoor adventures. I do like the fact that you can carry quite a few of the esbit tablets in the stove when it’s folded up and it takes no added space and very little weight. Enjoying your channel.

One thing you can do with the solid fuel stoves is use a heavy duty piece of aluminum. Shape it so the fuel tablet is kinda nested in there and the sides of the foil form approx. a 45 degree angle upwards. Kind of a bowl shape. It directs the heat up towards the pot and shields it from any wind. It'll make it boil quite a bit quicker. Also, it keeps the stove cleaner for longer.

When I was deployed to Australia for training with the Australian army we used their Esbit cubes for their MREs alwase used 3 or 4 cubes to boil water, not the quickest way to cook food in the field. But on the other hand their MREs tasted much better compared to ours.

Need to borrow an IR gun to see the heat distribution. Do agree that the sidewalls probably created radiant heat to help the heating process.

Seeing different flint, magnesium, waterproof matches and other fire starting methods would be cool

I’ve gathered fatwood and created chainsaw shavings & wax to make fire starters. There are many ways to make a fire in an emergency situation and so many different environments to attempt this. Then there is planning ahead vs unprepared. What to do when unprepared?
Fire can be a life saver. All good stuff. Can’t wait to see what you present.
