In 1997, Honda introduced the Type S performance brand for its Japanese domestic market NSX sportscar. Four years later, Type S made its debut in the U.S. via the 3.2 CL. Of the Type S models that would follow, the most memorable was the 2007 Acura TL Type S. With subtle styling tweaks, a more potent 3.5-liter V6 engine, and an available manual gearbox, the TL Type S was an affordable, stylish alternative to German and American 4-door sport sedans.

After more than a decade without a new Type S model, Acura is finally reviving the sub-brand with the 2021 Acura TLX Type S. Like its TL predecessor, the TLX Type S gets a mild makeover, a V6 engine (now turbocharged), and sportier driving dynamics. Sadly, the manual transmission didn't span the gap between models, but Acura promises that updates to its 10-speed automatic gearbox will satisfy enthusiasts. Is more power, better handling, sharper styling, and a well-equipped starting price of $53K enough to lure shoppers from vehicles like the Audi S4, BMW M340i xDrive, and Cadillac CT5-V? Find out in this in-depth review.

A lot of people forget to put the transmission in “S” mode. It’s right on the drive button. Just press it again while driving and you’ll get better response from the trans in both manual and auto

Your driving skills are very good. You're keeping the car in the lines which helps the audience recognize the performance of this vehicle.

The Tiger Eye is the best looking color on this car, and that Orchid interior color makes the perfect color combo. Probably one of the best looking colors on any car.

The most thorough Type S review yet. Well done.

Although I do miss the days when Acura cars actually had names like "Legend" and "Integra", this is one sweet looking car! Thanks for the in depth review.

Went to my local dealership ready to buy. They wanted 10k on top of unnecessary addons totaling up to 70k. Yea, ill pass.

Awesome review! Also should be noted that the strut brace is removable very easily in case you need a full pass through for cargo.

BMW 340i X-drive definitely provides a lot more performance, no doubt. But one thing many of you reviewers fail to point out, is reliability, resale value, and cost of ownership, which should be a HUGE factor in deciding what to buy, and Acura blows the beamer out of the water in those very important categories. That Type S is overbuilt with, for starters, an engine with forged internals. You can flog it all day and it will remain reliable for many years with little to no problems. The BMW on the other hand...well, let's just say it's a lease car. In other words, you want nothing to do with it after the first few years or when the warranty expires. The Acura is a car to actually own and rely on.

I did a test drive on this car yesterday.
The chassis feels great, it doesn't feel like it's heavy even though it is. It's more rigid, and the suspension and SH-AWD are a bit better than my old 2018 TLX. But I dislike the powerplant. It just has too much turbo lag, not enough power for the weight of the car, doesn't rev high. It has a very rubber-band-like feel to it. I'd love this car with the old naturally aspirated 3.5 V6 in it. Or maybe with an electric motor on top to compensate for the turbo lag or something, like the NSX ... Either way, I'm not gonna be buying it, particularly not over MSRP. It's a disappointment ...

Not to mention, the TLX (Honda/Acura) has better reliability than any of the other cars mentioned.

You have to put the transmission on S mode if you want to manual shift. It will allow you to get much closer to red line before the computer takes over.

A lot of people complain about the weight but I don’t plan on tracking mines when my order comes in. My theory is that the extra weight means that the car is Very stable, stiff, and was built to last. That extra weight is all in the frame.

The Type-S has a lot of value in it's pricing. One wonders how much it's weight affects a slowness as compared to it's rivals. Also, it's been pointed out that the transmission shifts more slowly in manual mode versus it's auto-sport mode. As you, many have also pointed out the short-shift "feature" that selects the next higher gear before redline is reached. I believe a tcu reflash will cure that, just as an ecu reflash to get the power closer to 400bhp, if the brakes can tolerate it. Or, just buy a BMW 240i x-drive. Problems solved.

This is how I would rank all cars in this segment:

1. BMW M340i
2. Mercedes AMG C43
3. Genesis G70 3.3T
4. Acura TLX Type S
5. Audi S4
6. Infiniti Q50 Red Sport 400

Hopefully the 2023 model will have a H.U.D, rear charging ports, rear heated seats and a power tilt telescopic steering wheel. I think it should all just be one complete package without having to sacrifice the v6 just to get these features in the smaller engine. Also some wireless apple carplay and android auto. I mean you can get the accord, they just gotta believe in themselves! Nice review miles, great as always keepin it light and fun.

Also I forgot to mention they should go ahead and put that touch screen in there, let people have the option to use the touch im finished, I think I let it all out. 😌
