From his first appearance in Beeton's Christmas Annual in 1887, in 'A Study in Scarlet', Sherlock Holmes established himself as the first, the best and the most famous of all private detectives. His serialised adventures in The Strand Magazine, starting with 'A Scandal in Bohemia' in 1891, developed the character into a literary sensation and in the 20th century he was to become the most portrayed character in screen history.

'The Adventure of the Devil's Foot' was the 43rd Sherlock Holmes story and first appeared in The Strand Magazine in December 1910, with illustrations by Gilbert Holiday. It was subsequently printed in book form as part of the short story collection 'His Last Bow', published in 1917. In 1927 Sir Arthur Conan Doyle ranked it 9th in an article listing his dozen favourite Sherlock Holmes adventures.

I have moderate insomnia, & your wonderful narration is keeping me company in the wee small hours.
I must say that there's been more than one occasion, your narration being of such quality, that I have found myself pulling the duvet tighter round my shoulders & feeling the same cold, prickling fear as experienced by many of the characters.

I adore the English accent! American narrators tend to put me to sleep and have a ho-hum rhythm. I read silently so I sound great! LOL
