That second PS5 turning off after a while, it seems to me like it has a faulty capacitor. Not a "shorted" capacitor, but a DEGRADED one related to the APU directly. The APU stops responding because the faulty capacitor is falling short of the capacitance it would need to stabilize the voltage going into the APU, so when there's a moment when the APU needs that energy and the capacitor is not delivering it in time, then there's only "dirty" energy going into the APU. So the APU becomes unstable and so the data inside gets corrupted. Causing a kernel panic. Also, the "unexpected power failure" can also be related to a capacitor because of the same reasons. I would look at the capacitors in the phases and/or replace the power supply for a known good one for testing.

I think its crazy how the brain works, cause I SWEAR I could smell it when you lifted that away to reveal the burnt area. WOW!

That second PS5 was quite odd with those bottom two MOSFETs seemingly working some and then not at all. I wonder if there could be a drive problem between the phase control IC and the DrMOS. Those six should be working in parallel to supply the massive current needed by the APU. I wonder if the APU core voltage is sagging because those MOSFETs are not helping. I wonder a lot. Great job!

i would love to see you transfer the APU and married components to a donor board, from the smoked PS5

I agree with a few other commenters about trying an known good PSU on the 2nd PS5 to see if the PSU is having intermittent faults

with the second PS5, it can be a bad PSU, even though its reporting 12v rail, under stress it can fail, i have had PSU that do this 100%

Misfits will pulse heat if there's some low resistance on another part of the board down from the mosfet. tvs that pulse normally have a bad diode or resistor on the output side. This can cause intermittent faults shutting the system down randomly.

Second one might be repairable, definitely take a chance at it again.

I started using the Better way Electronics UART reader and it seems a little more detailed then googling the codes. I am also curious if the Ram has an issues. I watched a video of Toltecmerc where his PS5 was stuttering and not running smoothly and replacing the 8 RAM chips did the trick. Worth a shot

The Magic Smoke has well left from that first PS5. Big time.

The flashing of the second mosfet suggests to me that something in that area is failing. I would strongly suggest replacing all the caps on the 2 bottom mosfets to rule it out. Apart from that as others have suggested could be power suppl, y especially considering the randomness of the errors in uart. 2 things to check.

Don't have experience in repairing electronics (just on embedded devices, debugging) but on the second PS5 I would check those capacitors and the phase control IC. Probably a scope would have prove useful.

Joey I had one doing the same thing and once the new update came out I updated it and its been fully working since

I would definitely try that second ps5 with a different PSU, could easily be a power dropout on the 12v supply, would also explain the lack or pulsing of power on the lower mosfets

I agree with a lot of comments: check the power supply. I had a pc that turned on fine, would load games and then randomly shit off (especially under stress). After checking every component it turns out my PSU was dying and would shut off under stress..new PSU and problems went away

Hi joey, been watching for a while, love the vids, got a technical question for you, sorry if it's been asked before but I've always wondered, when changing ports etc, why do you add solder, remove all the solder then add more? I understand the part around leaded Vs non leaded, but if it's already melted, why can't you just put another port on? Thanks!

In the case of the second ps5. I think that could be a psu problem as well. I hade it with my pc once that when I started a game my pc shut down because the power supply was damaged. When the comonents draw more power it could not handle it propery and shut down just like that ps5.

Joey, did you test the second console in a donor chassis? If not then I would try another power supply. They can test ok at no current but cut out under load.

You should try a different power supply on the second one. Maybe it cuts out.

Try swapping out the PSU on the second one, seems like it's crashing when the power draw ramps up.
