I've done this so many times in elementary school, yet I'm in high school and I forgot how to do this. The way you do this was the most easiest I can follow, so I hope I get the problem right on my homework soon. Thank you for making this anyways!

What happens if the fractional part in the larger number is smaller than the fractional part of the smaller number? That's right... you have to borrow. That is why you should always change mixed number into improper fractions first. This method is the best because you can use this method and it will work for all operations with fractions. It simplifies the process. You learn one method that always works, not multiple methods that only work some of the time.
