Thiamine (Vit B1) Deficiency Signs & Symptoms (& Why They Occur)

Thiamine (vitamin B1) is a vitamin required for energy metabolism, including the metabolism of glucose. Thiamine deficiency can caused by a decreased dietary intake, decreased absorption, increased utilization or increased losses. A thiamine deficiency can initially cause vague symptoms, and then subsequently may lead to conditions like Wet and Dry Beriberi, Wernicke’s encephalopathy, and Korsakoff’s syndrome. In this lesson, we discuss the early symptoms of thiamine deficiency, including the signs and symptoms of the Beriberi conditions and Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome.

Very informative and you will not hear a Dr tell you this. Only in cases of alcoholism and severe malabsorption. But my mom who recently died of " Alzheimer's" exhibited many of these symptoms for years, even being hospitalized for psychiatric disorder. And now, me and my sibling have had all sorts of these other symptoms I figured out awhile back diet and digestion was probably causing all these symptoms. I lost a younger sister in her 50s. I was in in very poor health and retired earlier than planned but have focused on this very thing and am now doing much better. Only help received from medical Dr was treating symptoms not causes.

I have celiac disease that was undiagnosed for 30 or 40 years, and on top of that I developed sibo, which severely limits my ability to absorb many nutrients. I call my thiamine deficiency, the trembles, because I get this very strong sensation of trembling. I shake and I can't keep my hand steady and I feel very very nervous, and the smallest sound can make me jump out of my skin. I eventually figured out that this was thiamine, and now I take liquid benfotiamine. And then I stop trembling.

Remember coffee interferes with B1 absorption. benfotiamine, TTFD, and sulbutiamine are advanced forms of thiamine, if anyone thinks they may have an issue, try the advanced forms.

Thank you for a very informative and thought provoking material. Just simple B1 vitamin deficiency might lead to so many serious conditions.

You just described me. 73 woman, worst case of Fibromyalgia in the world, Lupus and had Cardiomyopathy at 63. The former is an example. I have edema, neuropathy, the breathing problem and of course the Cardiomyopathy. A year after it happened I was seeing my Cardiologist. He said it was a miracle, I was back to normal. Now everything falls into place. After my diagnosis of the above I drove home and said they will see I will make it go away. In this case my having eaten healthy all my life was good but I probably made extra sure I was doing everything I could. I also know the power of the mind and worked on that. Thank you.

I had massively low B1 and Magnesium deficiency due to alcohol abuse. I ended up with Korsakoff's dementia.
I'm very lucky to be alive.

I had issues with peripheral neuropathy, and at the same time, I had one of my pupils being more dilated than the other, but this happened mostly at night so doctors couldn't see it and didn't believe me, or said it Was normal that one of my pupils was slightly bigger. I knew something Was wrong but nobody did nothing. I also was low-key dizzy, and so I concluded there was something wrong with my nerves, and I went to the neurologist for help but he made me feel stupid, he performed all physical tests on me and didn't find a problem, so he said my pins and needles and numbness were caused by something else, and to go to the eye doctor because he had nothing to do with eyes (!), and concluded everything was probably caused by "anxiety", which I also had but I Was sure it was related to the other conditions. since I insisted there was something wrong, he prescribed a super extensive and costly mri (not covered by insurance since there was no obvious damage), not without attaching The order with a pass for an appointment with the psychiatrist :( I told every doctor I've had gastrointestinal issues for years, but nobody took that into account, and they all dismissed me blaming my issues on "anxiety and depression", as if it was the cause and not one more symptom. They literally want you to be full on demented, emaciated or display the whole list of korsakoff symptoms (and not mild but clear and intense) to diagnose you and prescribe some supplements. same happens with every deficiency. And of course, vitamins are NEVER the first drugs to be prescribed, they just fill you with naids and every other (expensive and chronic) medication. I'm so happy we live on the age of information and try to find out what's wrong with us thanks to people like you. Thank you for sharing.

I wonder if some or most people who have this deficiency have it because of a digestive disorder like SIBO? It can cause nutrient malabsorption and lead to other diseases like fibromyalgia. I was having tummy issues and was diagnosed by a naturopath with SIBO, and subsequently followed a special diet to help alleviate symptoms. I did have the tingling and numbness in my legs and feet. Now I recall I had the vertigo too and dizziness. I thought it was due to high blood pressure but I suppose it could have been influenced by both. There is a concomitant issue called Gastrocardiac Syndrome.

If you are an alcoholic, please take B1 and potassium. Also reduce your intake. It helps to monitor how much you consume.

Numb lips? That did not happen in my hands and feet, but what did happen was that I felt like I was terrified. And I mean I felt physically like I was terrified, but emotionally I was not. It was entirely physical. And the smallest sound could make me literally jump right out of my skin.

Don't precursor symptoms include itching? First underarms, then extending to torso? Then head psoriasis? All completely cured with B1 supplements.

I just do what vegans do, take two table spoons of nutritional yeast every day, it has all the B vitamins including a high amount of B1.

For every drink maybe we should take a lot of B complex with extra B1 like Benfothiamine ? Alcohol is bad !
