Top 4 Most Effective Fighting Stances for a Fight

No one fighting stance is better than the other, just like no one martial art is the best! But, you must know how to adjust to any opponent or scenario, so practice them all. In this video, Shane teaches you the Boxing stance, Muay Thai march, Wrestling Sugar Stance, and a street self-defense guarded position.
NOTE: This video is talking about STANCE, not the martial art as a whole, or individual fighter!

The grading system is broken up into three different sections: striking, grappling, and the sprawl. Striking is the ability to throw and defend against various attacks from punches, to kicks, to knees, to elbows. Grappling is the art of controlling your opponent, manipulating their movements, or applying submissions like joint locks or chokes. Finally, the sprawl is the ability to avoid a takedown like the double-leg.

The last stance is like 'pass me the ball' stance.

I find the most effective fighting stance to be the one with a *Glock* in your hand.

I really like the fetal stance. Striking is a bit limited though.

The most hood one is the one I will pick

I've been practicing palm strikes on my heavy bag. I've got to say, I was highly skeptical of them when I first heard you recommend them back in your street boxing series. But to my surprise they seem highly effective. My hands feel more free and quicker, and the power is still there as well.

I love how you got the faces right for the stances. This really helps me personally to position myself in those situations. Great video as always, Shane!

I like the curling up into a ball and be patient stance

I like how you implement the open hands in the last stance. I take a largely street self defense course and you have no idea how important it is for you and bystanders to see your open hands

Just keep moving around your target, come in for some jabs once or twice in a while to test what they weakness in terms of techniques are. If they drop their guard when you jab at their stomach, just go for a knockout. If they keep their guard up, go for takedowns.

Have a bit of a problem with how you teach your open hand technique, I don't disagree with it's usage or what you have to say about it; just what you don't say or rather don't give the time to teach. Protecting the fingers.

You touch on the fundamental that knuckles are easy to damage in a street fight without a lot of training. However you don't emphasise that without correct finger awareness or positioning fingers are incredibly easy to break in open hand technique; broken fingers are the most common injury in the street orientated Japanese Jiu Jutsu schools from my experience and I'm certain it is much the same in the other open hand practical schools.

Habitually keeping the fingers together or tucking the fingers partially is a complete must, one I have never seen you cover. Amateurs following your tips and using open hand with spread fingers are going to get absolutely mangled hands in a fight.

Not pointlessly criticising, would actually really appreciate if you would just mention it in some of your open hand videos in passing; a lot of your teaching is very practical and wouldn't want it to be negated by a small detail.

Unlikely this comment will be read at this point, but this really does need to be addressed.

I always go with the high and closed shotokan karate stance.
Far away from my opponent punching range, great for defending kicks, punches and take downs.

I was in a fight las Tuesday. The guy got mad at me because I didn't do as he said. So he hit me in the face then I'm backing away to give him a chance to stop, witch he don't. The I grab he's arm kicks him behind his knee so he sits down and then I take him to the ground and hold he's arm so he can't do anything. And I want to charge him for violence. I could only protect myself like I did because of you Shane, thank you very much

"I don't want any trouble" with elbows ready did the trick for me once :D

Hi Shane. Great videos! I was wondering if you'd consider getting more teachnical with these stances in a future video. I.e., how far apart are the feet, foot angles and body angles, and weight distribution. I am loosely aware of much of this, but I am generally finding little local instruction on the various options and using them. Anyway, I hope you get this, and consider it. Thanks for all your videos!

You don't have to choose your stance, mix it up! Depends on the situation you're in or your opponent is. I always change it from boxing, to muay thai, to karate even.

Most people don't know how to fight, and the ones who do, tend to avoid fighting as much as possible. As long as you can effectively throw straight punches and block/dodge haymakers, you'll win most of your fights. Just make sure that when throwing punches, u aim for the lower part of the face, cheek bones and down, so you don't break your hands.

Also, I like to flick my jabs open handed but usually follow with the cross with a closed fist on impact. And because of you man I've started carrying a mouthpiece on me at all times. Be ready for whatever, whenever.
