Ever wonder what you are going to do with all of those tomatoes growing in your garden? Why not make some awesome homemade ketchup that tastes just like the name brand!

It seems like every year I end up with all of these volunteer tomato plants. And, of course, most of them end up being the less desirable cherry tomatoes! So this year I have ended up with literally thousands of cherry tomatoes that are started to drop and just go to waste. I decided to start collecting them all and found a great recipe for homemade ketchup. We tried this recipe a few weeks prior and absolutely loved it and thought we would share the process with you.

Below is the recipe and directions for making homemade ketchup using any variety of tomatoes you have on hand. One thing to remember is that one batch of this recipe only make about 1 half pint of ketchup so if you want to make a lot for long term storage you will need a lot of tomatoes!

Ingredients:
56 ounces or about 4-5 cups of tomatoes (after processed not whole)
2/3 cup sugar
3/4 cup white vinegar
1 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 3/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon celery salt
1/8 teaspoon mustard powder
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1 whole clove

Directions -
1. Cut tomatoes in halves or quarters and scoop out as many of the seeds as possible then add to blender or food processor.
process until you have enough for one batch or about 56 ounces (4-5 cups once processed.

2. Place tomato puree in pot on stove or in slow cooker ( I much prefer the faster stove method)

3. Cook on med-high heat to cook off excess water. Cook it until it is about half of original volume.

4. You may add all the seasonings while it is cooking down

5. Once it is cooked down ladle into fine metal strainer and force through scraping off the ketchup from the bottom of the strainer as you go into bowl.

6. If ketchup is still watery cook down further until desired consistency.

7. You may can this ketchup for long term storage or if done in smaller batches can be kept in ketchup bottle or canning jar in the refrigerator for a few weeks.

I love that everything is very thoughtfully processed and nothing is wasted. We give all our food scraps to our chickens and it make so much sense. I don’t know why some people don’t feed their chickens scraps.

To check for thickness, put a dab on a plate or saucer and make a nickel size circle tilt the plate and if there is no liquid anywhere below the circle you made its should be thick enough. If you get any liquid it needs to cook longer.  Thanks for the video, good info and recipe.

This is great! We made it last week. We only got a pint. We didn't can it, just put it in the fridge. It was too thin so we cooked it down by another 25% and it was perfect.
We're making it again right now, but we cut the sugar down a bit. Everything else is the same.

Great recipe! The house smells fantastic and the hood is blowing it outside where I was working.
I want some fries!

If you're buried in tomatoes right now this is an awesome way to use them. Can it and you have ketchup for a year.

Cherry tomato soup is another thing you can do with the cherry tomatoes. Seriously- the best tomato soup I've ever had/made. NOM!

my grandmother would put them in her minestrone soup. She would add them whole to her chicken broth and other veggies, and I loved to watch them pop open from the pressure.

Just finished making this. Thickened up just like ketchup and has a very nice taste. Thank you for sharing. Great way to use up my cherry and above-oddly-shaped heirlooms :)

This was a very good video, but it would have been perfect if you would have shown us the end product. I would have loved to see the actual ketchup when cooled and ready to eat. Thanks for your video though!!

Looks good. Getting a deal on cherry tomatoes and was wondering if I could do this. Don’t forget if you don’t have chickens, you can take the leftover pulp and dehydrate it. It will grind down to a beautiful tomato powder which is perfect for adding flavor and wonderful for either the spice cabinet or long term storage when you have a bad tomato season. 😘

Well I wanted to let you know I successfully made and canned this ketchup recipe. I tried 1 other one too just to see what was better. And I gotta tell you this was a great recipe. The other one was too spicey and almost had a bbq taste. This one definatley taste alot like heinz. My hubby and kids like it too. I love my ketchup, I eat it on everything in fact I'm eating it now on my grill cheese. Now I just have to make more I'm going to try to triple the recipe next time. The other kind I made I started with 20 cups of already strained tomatoes and it turned out a good thickness. So just wanted to say thanks for the video and sharing the recipe. I literally read thru approx 20 different recipes but kept coming back to this one and I'm glad this is the one I'll stick with.
God Bless and stay safe

This is great! I did add two more cups of tomato puree because I found it too sweet. It was perfect after that!!! Thank you! I wonder if this can be done in larger batches?

I just made this and it turned out great ..But even though you didn't call for much sugar, my Ketchup seemed way to sweet. I don't know if it's because I used only full sized tomatoes are that maybe I just have sweeter tomatoes, but I added the amount you said.. However I"ll just add half the amount of sugar and it should be spot on!

i know you clone plants in your aquaponics system but i was wondering if you ever save your seeds for your outdoor gardening? if so maybe that would be a good topic for a video. Huge fan of your videos and am always excited for another one to come out.

*LOL! 😂 He didn't show the end product because it didn't thicken. That was too thin. He didn't make ketchup. He made tomato soup!*
