Sounds a lot like a Tantalum cap exploding. Which could also explain the contrast getting fixed. Did it make a stink?

It was probably got a piece of dust on the contacts because if you have a stereo you can see all the dost in the radio 📻 so if there's a lot you turn that stereo on you can see see little fuzzy's catching fire

Ok but for anyone wearing headphones, the audio coming purely from the back left freaks you out

The explosion might've been on the display board rather than the main board. It must've been a bad capacitor bringing down the contrast, and then it fully failed and since it wasn't essential to the operation of the display, the contrast issue fixed itself.
