Struggle with apologies at work? You’re not alone…
Needlessly over-apologizing at work (i.e. saying “sorry” too often when it’s unnecessary) can dangerously undermine your credibility, especially where you’re already lacking in confidence or your credibility is in question (e.g. you’re the most inexperienced person in the team, you’re a minority or a woman in a male dominated environment).
Here are four examples of what to say instead of “sorry”:
– “Good catch, thanks for picking that up.”
– “Thanks for flagging, is there anything else I missed?”
– “Thanks for letting me know. I’ll update that now."
– “Thanks for noticing. Let me fix it.”
But what about those times when an apology IS justified?
What then?
If you’re uncertain, here are 5 suggested steps to a professional apology:
1️⃣ Explain what went wrong
2️⃣ Take responsibility
3️⃣ Apologize with sincerity
4️⃣4 Be Proactive about a Commitment to improvement
5️⃣ Close with poise
▶️ As a bonus you might also like to ask if there’s anything else you can do to rectify the situation. “How can I make this right?” Or “what else can I do to fix this?”
Save this post for when you might need it!!
